Facebook has removed US President Donald Trump's election ads that portrayed refugees as a health and safety risk to the US.

The company said on Thursday that it was not allowing people to be portrayed as a threat to the "safety, health and life" of others because of their origin or immigration status.

In the campaigns it was said that Trump's challenger Joe Biden of the opposition Democrats was "dangerous for America" because as president he would allow many more refugees from Syria and Somalia into the country.

The countries are referred to as "terrorist hot spots" and reference is made to the current corona pandemic.

Facebook had already blocked ads from the Trump campaign team in June that contained a symbol used in Nazi concentration camps for political prisoners.

The Trump team had warned against "radical left groups" with an inverted red triangle.

Advertisements that question the outcome of the election are prohibited

Before the US presidential elections on November 3rd, online platforms are under great pressure to take action against hate speech and disinformation online.

Facebook has now announced stricter rules for paid content on the process and outcome of the election.

Not only would advertisements proclaiming a winner of the presidential election prematurely be banned, but also advertisements that were intended to cast doubt on the outcome of the election.

This could be the case if an election method is described as particularly susceptible to fraud, or if "isolated cases of election fraud" are used to cast doubt on the overall result, said Facebook manager Rob Leathern.

Trump has been stirring up doubts about the electoral process for months and claims, without any evidence, that postal elections were massively cheated.

Observers fear that the polled president might not recognize an election defeat.
