A forty-something was in custody Tuesday in Chambéry after admitting to having killed during an argument his companion, found dead last weekend in the basements of their building, we learned from the prosecution.

The alleged murderer “will be referred in the afternoon” with a view to his probable indictment, Chambéry prosecutor Pierre-Yves Michau told AFP.
The 45-year-old suspect explained that he had hit "then strangled his 47-year-old companion on Saturday around 3:30 p.m., during a violent argument which degenerated", detailed the prosecutor.
At least 60 suspected feminicides in 2020
The man told investigators that he then lowered the body of the victim rolled up in a tarp in the cellars of their residence in Chambéry-le-Haut, around 2 a.m. overnight from Saturday to Sunday.
It was there, in the basements, that another occupant of the building made the macabre discovery on Sunday and alerted the police.
Placed in custody on Sunday, the suspect first told investigators that to his knowledge his wife had left for Grenoble and that he had not heard from her since, the prosecutor said.

This case brings to at least 60 the number of suspected feminicides since the beginning of the year, according to an AFP count.
In 2019, 146 women were killed by their spouse or ex-partner, 25 more than the previous year, according to the latest official figures.
