A man was shot dead in Avignon on Thursday by police as he threatened people in the street with a gun.
Called around 10 a.m. by a passer-by reporting that a man equipped with a pistol-type handgun was threatening people, the police intervened.
"The man charged at them with his weapon and was killed by the police," said a spokesperson for the Avignon police.
The assailant refused to let go of his weapon.
The events took place in the Montfavet district of the city.
"There are no injuries," continued this source.
"All avenues are being considered, but for the moment we do not have an Islamist character", indicated several police sources, while France was struck earlier in the day by a terrorist attack in Nice.
The investigation in Avignon is for the moment entrusted to the judicial police.
