Danny Abdia's press conference after being selected in the draft (photo and editing: Yossi Tzipkis)
Danny Abdia's big dream came true tonight (Wednesday to Thursday), when the 19-year-old Israeli was selected ninth in the NBA Draft by Washington.
This is a slightly lower choice than the commentators estimated, and yet, the excited Abdia hugged his family, and then went out to the dozens of people who came to the event he held in south Tel Aviv and were greeted with singing.
Not only did Abdia celebrate - the Wizards were happy too, because they reportedly did not believe the Israeli would slip until the ninth election.
General manager Tommy Shepherd released Shagat Simcha at the club's offices and coach Scott Brooks said of it: "I love Tommy's enthusiasm, he's so happy. I thought he was going to do like Carl Lewis and start running."
Shepherd said he has been scouting for Abdia since he was 16: "He was undoubtedly the highest ranked player on our board, we are grateful he fell to selection 9. He has great potential as a winger and as a secondary playmaker and we think he is going to compliment the talent we have "In the squad. He will be able to play in every quintet we put together, he is a proven player who played at the highest level in Europe."
