Almost 16,000 new infections in Germany

8.25 a.m.:

The health authorities reported 15,741 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within 24 hours.

Compared to the value a week ago, this is 1206 fewer infections, as RKI data from Sunday morning shows.

Last Sunday the number was 16,947.

The numbers are comparatively low on Sundays and Mondays because, according to the RKI, fewer samples are taken on the weekend and therefore fewer tests are performed overall.

However, the number of new infections is only partially comparable with that of the previous weeks, as the RKI, among other things, has adjusted the recommendations for corona tests on who should still be tested.

The step was necessary as more and more laboratories were reaching their limits.

But the decision could not only affect the number of new infections but also the proportion of positive tests.

After the number of new infections every day rose sharply in October and early November, the value has recently been comparatively stable.

However, there has not yet been a significant decrease in new infections, although a partial shutdown has been in place in Germany since the beginning of November.

The RKI has counted a total of 918,269 proven infections with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic.

The number of deaths related to the virus rose 138 as of Sunday to a total of 14,022.

The RKI estimates that around 603,800 people have now recovered.

According to the RKI situation report on Saturday, the so-called seven-day R was 1.07 (previous day: 1.05).

This means that, on average, every person who is infected with SARS-CoV-2 infects approximately one more person.

The value represents the occurrence of the infection 8 to 16 days ago.

If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides.

Education union GEW calls for free masks for teachers and students

8.20 a.m.:

The federal chairman of the education union GEW, Marlis Tepe, has called for free masks for students and teachers to protect against corona infections.

Teachers should also receive particularly good protective FFP2 masks free of charge, Tepe told the newspapers of the Funke media group.

After all, it is “the employer's task to take care of the necessary occupational health and safety measures for employees, but also for children and young people”.

The chairman of the Federal Parents' Council, Stephan Wassmuth, also called for further protective measures.

"We are happy that the schools are open, but health care must be in the foreground," he told the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung".

Although many schools had developed good concepts for alternating lessons, the ministers of education stubbornly stuck to normal operations.

"You cannot understand that more and more time goes into the country without a decision," criticized Wassmuth.
