Archaeologists hope to be able to say more precisely what was served at the corner snack in ancient Rome.

In Pompeii - the city that was buried under the ash and lava of Vesuvius in 79 AD - they have the remains of a Thermopolium, a shop for hot food and drinks.

Massimo Osanna, Archaeologist

This is an extraordinary find.

We are in the Thermopolium in the Regio V area, where excavations began two years ago.

At that time we discovered one side of the counter, a beautiful piece.

The snack was in one of the most beautiful places in Pompeii.

The frescoes apparently show, among other things, what there was to eat.

On this page we see poultry just before slaughter and preparation, then this beautiful dog on a leash - something like a" warning of the dog "sign.

It is the first complete thermopoly to be discovered in Pompeii.

The researchers found, among other things, a bronze drinking bowl and wine bottle - and the containers for the snacks have also been preserved.

We can now analyze the remains of the materials in the containers and find out what passers-by in Pompeii could buy here to eat and drink.

We will get to know a really extraordinary testimony to the Mediterranean food culture.

«

The researchers also found an incomplete skeleton in the snack, a victim of the volcanic eruption in Pompeii almost two thousand years ago.

Around 13,000 people lived in the city, around 23 kilometers from Naples, until the eruption of Vesuvius.

Around a third of the Unesco world cultural heritage has not yet been exposed.
