Summary 2020: Not what you thought

2020 was, as has been said, a particularly challenging year for the automotive industry.

Economic and health crisis, closures, production difficulties, beyond showing models in zoom squares instead of car shows.

So we also decided to sum up this year in an alternative way

Despite the corona, Israelis continued to buy cars

The automotive world has not escaped the effects of the corona plague.

Not in the industrial aspect of the chain of production, supply and sale of vehicles and not in the aspect of this world coverage.

The car shows, which have weakened in recent years have been canceled one after another, launch events have been reduced to faltering zoom transmitters as the attention is divided between what happens on the screen and the cat walking on the keyboard and the reminder to take the laundry out of the machine.

And for such a disruptive year, we thought it worth a very different year summary than we are used to.

So yes, somewhere at the end of this article you will find who sold more than whom and everything.

But before that, together with Amir Weinstock from the "Karzon" website and their information systems that analyze the car market data to find the best deals, we collected some of the data and things that we thought might not matter, but well, you should know about 2020 in the car market.

On the eve of the second closure: The car market maintains stability

To the full article

Our car became more expensive this year

1. Lots and lots of money

Beyond the fact that our car market is very strange, and manages to fall by a very moderate 15 percent compared to other industries that have crashed.

And come on - this is a vehicle, although an important product that is difficult to get by in a country with not really reliable public transportation, but still, it is not a basic consumer product.

You would think that in a time of crisis and belt tightening, the urge to replace a car would not be so strong, and yet.

But not only the impulse, but also the sums we spent on it - this year about 222,000 vehicles were sold in Israel with a total cost of 36 billion shekels in a quick calculation. This means that the average price of a car in Israel is a very nice number of 162,162 shekels. Of the Karzon website for comparing car prices, compared to last year we spent much more on new cars, in 2019 their average price was NIS 157,000.

One reason is the decline in purchases of car fleets and rental companies that would have bought the cheaper cars and almost never did so this year.

But it could also be that we're really suckers.

Not only luxury, but also the Hyundai i10 in parallel imports that is getting stronger

2. The rise of parallel imports

The import channel indirect to that of the official importer was previously reserved only for luxury cars or those sold at very large price differences relative to their price in their country of origin.

When the profit margin was high and it was possible to buy a car with gaps of up to NIS 150,000 and NIS 200,000 less than the price in the showroom, this channel gained momentum.

Last year, however, we saw the rise of another indirect import channel - the parallel import of relatively popular brands offered by models not marketed by the main importer such as Honda Odyssey, Insight and Accord Hybrid or Toyota Sienna, Highlander and others.

But the more significant change was also the entry of models since marketed by the importer and really competing head to head in Toyota Corolla, CHR, Yaris, Volkswagen Polo, Hyundai Santa Fe and others sometimes in slightly different specifications and at lower prices and even the smaller Hyundai i10.

So it is true that the 5,500 vehicles that arrived this year on this route are far from a critical mass, but the fact that they constitute a 10 percent increase in the year in which the entire market declines and despite the economic atmosphere that "attracts" conservative customers customers trust this channel - this is in line.

The sedan cars, once the bread and butter of the market disappear

3. Bye bye sedan

If until 10-5 years ago you would give a 5-year-old child a pencil and tell him to draw a car, he would take out something very reminiscent of a Subaru DL - a classic three-box configuration.

That's how Mr. Israeli loved his car.

If you give a 5 year old boy a pencil today and tell him to draw a car he will try to stab you with the pencil or eat it, because in my life children become dumber more and more, but if he does draw a car it will look like two big, round boxes - it will look like a crossover or c Japan or something.

Because our market has completely changed and today this is how Mr. and Mrs. Israeli love it, tall, big, shiny - and damn fuel consumption and behavior.

49 percent of the vehicles sold in 2020 were in leisure-Jeep-crossover configurations, while the sedan configuration drops to 20 percent.

She can take comfort in the fact that the configuration that is really perfect - station wagon shuffles in the 2 percent areas.

Dual-clutch gearbox - made its debut in the market

So from the manual boxes we have long since said goodbye, one really has to make an effort to find a new manual today their supply is approaching 20 cars (excluding sports cars and tandems) and in practice their market share stands at about 0.3 percent.

But there is no news here right?

The more interesting thing in the 2020 summary is the jump of the dual-clutch gearbox to the top of the list of the most common writing in Israel.

36.1 percent of the gearboxes of the cars sold this year in Israel were dual-clutch, the good old planetary automatic in second place with 29.8 percent, in a continuous gearbox 29.3 percent of customers were punished and the rest are scattered over manual and robotic gearboxes with a single clutch.

So if in the beginning it characterized mainly the cars of the Volkswagen concern and suffered from many childhood diseases, with its entry into more and more manufacturers (especially its penetration into Korean) due to fuel economy and its improved performance it gradually climbed to its place most common writing in Israel.

A partial list of cars with such a box includes the Ibiza, Hyundai Kona, Kia Rio, Volvo XC40, Hyundai i20, Clio, Rio, Audi A1, Mercedes A-Class, Ionic, Renault Grand Coupe and I'm just warming up.

Apropos are heating up, meanwhile it's too early to know if running into these sophisticated and expensive boxes was the right thing to do, in a few years we'll be smarter and maybe even poorer to know if they's an immature product or if it takes a few more years to mature.

MG ZS Electric - 700 units this year in a segment that will continue to grow

5. One eye forward

If there is one thing that 2020 has taught us - it is that one should be very careful in trying to predict the future because the whole business here is very fragile.

That, and good hand wash well, we also learned that.

And yet with the requisite caution and with an examination of processes that are already beginning to move, one can put the finger on two components that are going to characterize the market in 2021, perhaps not in the absolute numbers, but as a point in time where one can put the finger on where things start to happen.

The first is the continued entry of electric cars into Israel, along with the expansion of charging infrastructure.

The reasons can be varied, whether the incentive is a significant saving in vehicle maintenance costs (treatments, fuel, spare parts) in the cheaper cars or a kind of green status symbol in the more luxurious cars of Audi, Jaguar, Mercedes and others that will join in 2021.

This year we saw about 1,150 of them hit the roads when in 2019 it was only 602 and there is no reason to think that we will not see a jump in higher altitude next year.

Their undisputed ruler was the electric MG ZS, which sold its 700 units thanks to a combination of a good propulsion unit, rich instrumentation and an attractive price.

Another Chinese on the way: Get to know SERES

AIWAYS U5 New Chinese electric on the way to us (Photo: Manufacturer)

And this vehicle leads us to the next point, because beyond being electric, it is Chinese.

You should get used to this moment when you start seeing car symbols that you are not really familiar with.

Because the two already here (MG from SAIC imported by Lubinski and GAC of Guangzhou Automotive brought by Union Motors) will be joined next year by three or even four other brands.

The first is SERES, which will be imported by Talkar and will initially compete with MG and GAC in the price range of NIS 140,000 before expanding with a more expensive model.

The second brand is EUNIQ, which will be imported by China Motors, which until now was mainly active in the worlds of buses with Yutong and the commercials with the Maxus brand (of which EUNIQ is the luxury division).

The third brand will be AIWAYS, which will be imported by the Bellilios Group, which is also deeply rooted in importing buses from China, and with the model that the U5 will import, it will also enter the private electric car market.

In the more distant future, probably after 2021, we will also see here a car of GEELY, Volvo's parent company, these will arrive here under the wings of Union Motors.

Hyundai maintains its place as the best-selling brand in Israel

6. And yet the brands sold

It does not matter, it does not matter, it does not say anything about the quality of the car or even what Mr. Israeli likes.

1. Hyundai

2. Toyota

Not the one who gets a car from work and does not really care, but the one who pays out of his own pocket for the car, also for the treatments and also has to sell it later.

But it's another time.
