The research findings

  • Ituran thwarted and prevented the theft of 9,080 vehicles in 2020, with an estimated aggregate value of NIS 836 million.

  • In 60% of the theft incidents in the possession of the thief, the car key was found, 13% of all theft attempts were by the violent burglary method, 14% by connecting to an OBD socket, 10% by dragging / loading the tool and stealing it.

  • Ituran's large-scale sample shows that in analyzing the thieves' preferred areas, Gush Dan continues to lead the theft table in Israel with 32% of all theft incidents, followed by the Sharon area with 24%, the southern area with 15%, the Shefela area with 10%, Jerusalem with 8 %, The northern region with 7% and Judea and Samaria with 4%.

  • The main target of car thieves in 2020 was the PA areas (Tulkarm, Ramallah and Hebron), similar to previous years.

  • In 2020, car thieves focused on moving the stolen vehicles through the checkpoints and breaches in the separation fence from the PA to the cities of Ramallah, Qalqilya and Tulkarm, which are located near the center of the country and which serve as cities of refuge for thieves for all intents and purposes.

  • During this period, Ituran increased the use of technological means, to prevent car thefts among them: deployment of skimmers in the 80 enforcement squads of and the use of LPR cameras.

Interpretation: The revolving door of car theft in Israel - Keinan Cohen

A number of factors combine to blossom into car thefts in Israel, the two most prominent of which we have known for years and they intensified during the Corona period.

If there is no significant change in the state's approach to this phenomenon - it is not going to change and we are going to pay the price.

The bulk of the "theft" industry is designed to fuel the auto parts market.

Most stolen cars end up back on our roads, but not in one piece, but when they are scattered across several vehicles, a fuel pump here, a taillight there, a left door in that car and a bumper in the other.

As the economic situation continues to make it difficult for citizens, more and more of them will be tempted to the reality of used spare parts from unknown and cheap sources.

From this also derives the level of risk to those popular vehicles for which the parts are highly sought after.

The second factor is the easy and convenient option of "summoning" a theft, because in the end who has the time and energy to sell the car on the bulletin board, get dozens of snooze calls, haggle, feel knocked out, explain that rubbing the bumper is not evidence of a terrible accident you are trying to hide - If it is possible to simply arrange for the vehicle to "disappear" from the parking lot and within a day or two receive the money from the insurance.

In this arrangement everyone benefits.

By the way, if we are dealing with insurance scams, you should also pay attention to the following phenomenon: car owners who reach an agreement with a truck driver or tractor operator who in exchange for a few thousand shekels will also be used to repair the damage, drive a violent reverse into the car and bring it down and then leave.

Allows the owner to file a "I came-found" claim with the insurance company.

And if you think this arrangement is convenient for everyone and all parties benefit except the insurance company that has to pay, then do not make a mistake, like in a casino, even when one in a few tens or hundreds of thousands of players someone comes out with a pile of bills - in all other cases the house always wins, enough for us all to lose .
