Zuckerberg says it is too risky to allow the president to continue using the services of the social network

The founder and CEO of Facebook Inc, Mark Zuckerberg, has assured in a message on his personal account of the social network that both Facebook and Instagram will extend "indefinitely", and at least for the next two weeks, the blocking of the accounts of Donald Trump, after the serious incidents of this Wednesday.

Hundreds of protesters stormed the US Capitol to force Congress not to declare the outgoing president's electoral defeat, prompted by his messages on social media denouncing "electoral fraud."

“We believe that the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this period are simply too great.

Therefore, we are extending the lockdown on their Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely and for at least the next two weeks until the peaceful transition of power is completed, ”Zuckerberg writes.

The social network follows in the footsteps of Twitter, which yesterday temporarily suspended Trump's account and deleted three tweets from the president, including a video in which the Republican asked the Capitol protesters to “go home, but maintained that the election had been stolen from the Republicans and that "that's something everyone knows, even those on the other side" referring to the Democrats.

On Wednesday, both YouTube and Facebook removed the Trump video.

“This is an emergency situation [referring to the assault on the Capitol by Trump supporters] and we are taking appropriate emergency measures, including the removal of the video of President Trump.

We removed it because, overall, we believe it contributes to, rather than decreases, the risk of continued violence, ”explained Guy Rosen, Facebook's chief integrity officer.

“The shocking events of the past 24 hours clearly demonstrate that President Donald Trump intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and legal transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden.

His decision to use his platform to condemn rather than condemn the actions of his supporters in the Capitol building has rightly upset people in the United States and around the world.

Yesterday we withdrew his statements because we judge that their effect, and probably their intention, would be to provoke more violence, "Zuckerberg explains in his profile.

The Facebook CEO points out that after the certification of the electoral results by Congress, which give the presidential victory to Democrat Joe Biden, the priority for the entire country “must now be to ensure that the remaining 13 days and the days after the election of possession pass peacefully and in accordance with established democratic norms ”.
