With the vaccine, there is a great temptation to believe that a return to normal life will be soon.
As Prime Minister Jean Castex has recognized, vaccination against Covid is the main source of “
hope
” in 2021. This hope is in fact twofold: on the one hand, we could hope that the vaccine will reduce the severity of Covid-19 disease, especially for vulnerable people;
on the other hand, we might hope that the vaccine will prevent the Sars-CoV-2 virus (carrier of the Covid-19 disease) from circulating.
It is in relation to this second effect that the term “
collective immunity
” has
been used since the start of the epidemic
.

However, at the beginning of the week, Olivier Véran, the Minister of Health, declared that he was “
convinced that we will reach (it) a good rate of collective immunity without going through the vaccination obligation
”.
But how much of the population needs to be immunized to achieve this?
