Trailer for "The Bling Empire" (Netflix)

Closure, paranoia, unemployment and zero places of entertainment, in the last year also the people who always despised you when you talked about TV suddenly started checking if you have a direction for some good series (in private of course).

You know, something that can be seen on Bing, that flows for shared viewing with your spouse as well.

Oh, yes, and if it could be similar to the last series they really liked: "Queen Gambit" / "The Crown" / "Emily in Paris" / another.

Which means it's not been a bad year for streaming companies, primarily Netflix, whose stock has risen 67 percent.

On the other hand, although Corona and the global closure were supposed to make 2020 the Netflix pink dream, it was also not an easy year for it as more and more competitors hit the market and offered it a fight in a variety of areas (meanwhile, most of them operate mostly in the US market).

It is important to note mainly HBO Max and Disney +: the first is part of the Warner Bros. group, the second is simply Disney, both of which were launched with a relatively small amount of content (for Netflix) but offer a difficult alternative in the form of quality and highly talked about content.

As it seems Netflix's strategy to keep the lead is "simple" - try to keep firing on all fronts.

According to data published on the Statista website, as of the third quarter of 2020 Netflix has 195 million paying subscribers - and you know how many of you share a subscription with the neighbor's daughter - which means it has to produce and purchase huge amounts of content, and preferably one that suits everyone's tastes.

The result?

A huge variety of content that goes into service every week, from series like "Bridgerton" (under the huge contract of Shonda Reims), through high-budget movies like "Midnight Sky", crime docu like "In the Dark of Night" and alongside them a constant stream of reality.

The change?

As time goes on you can feel more and more Netflix’s appeal to diverse audiences and not just American audiences, Asian countries have long become one of the most influential markets for the success of new projects, and specifically India with more than a billion inhabitants is starting to be felt in the content offering.

Accordingly, in the last few months a variety of reality series have come up, some of them really entertaining and fun, others are a complete bizarre, all of which will make your time pleasant.

11 moments that prove that "Sex and the City" was great

A mediator for viewers in the sea of rich and crazy Asians.

Kevin, "The Bling Empire" (Photo: PR, Netflix)

Bling Empire

The comedy "Surprise Rich" (or in its original and more successful name "Crazy Rich Asians") was one of the great cinematic surprises of recent years.

As you may recall, it is about the story of a young couple from New York who travel to a family wedding in Singapore (where the guy comes from), and when they get there, his partner is exposed to the absurd wealth of his family and gets into a battle between cultures.

"Surprisingly Rich" managed to give a final stamp to the fact that films aimed primarily at the Asian community can become cross-sector blockbusters, in addition it also exposed us to a culture we did not really know - the excessive wealth of the generation for whom communism is a bad word.

"The Bling Empire" takes everything you saw in the movie and proves that reality is much exaggerated.

The protagonist of the bling empire, Kevin, is a model of Korean descent who is adopted by a white family and moves to fulfill himself in Los Angeles, where he is sponsored by a group of insanely rich Asians who join him for their social gatherings (don't worry, there is no social distance here) .

The beautiful Kevin serves as a kind of mediator for viewers who for a moment will have a hard time believing that what is seen on screen is real.

"Bling" is such an extreme series, at a level that makes "The Kardashian Family" look like a little family drama taken straight from the "Dokaviv" festival.

Her protagonists are rich on a level I do not remember (something like a thousand times more Nicole Reidman) but mostly do not apologize for it in any way.

After all, when you come to watch the eight episodes of the first season, you should release the issue of credibility in advance, it probably does not exist and it is really a spin.

An unforgettable character.

Anna Shea, "The Bling Empire" (Photo: PR, Netflix)

In her gallery of memorable characters one can find Kevin's (supposedly) best friend - a guy named Kane Lim, a member of a family of billionaires from Singapore who is obsessed with shopping for super brands, gossiping about the rest of the cast and a relentless rage about Kevin.

Besides him there is Christine, the "Queen of Beverly Hills" married to Dr. Chu, who she says is part of China's imperial dynasty. She is one of the most economically piggy figures seen on screen, she celebrates the money she married as if there is no poverty in the world and is busy In creating imaginary quarrels with the real protagonist of the series - Anna.

And yes, Anna Shea is such a great character that it is worth devoting a separate paragraph to her. Like the other characters in the series, Shay was born into her wealth and did not earn it herself, the "friends" say she inherits One of the largest arms and oil tycoons in the world, she lives in a mansion and her age is probably somewhere on the line between the mid-fifties and late sixties. Like all the characters in the series, we get an explanation of Anna's 'Asianness' which is half Russian and half Japanese, but it's No matter, what makes her an unforgettable character is the fact that she really does not put a cut on anyone and anything. In one of the amazing moments in the series, a team of the super brand "Christian Dior" arrives at her estate so you can choose a new wardrobe, the casualness with which she takes off her clothes. The camera (to the surprise of the rest of the filmed by the way), proves once again that when you have so much money you do not really have to give enough

Estate and account to no one.

There are many more intriguing characters in "Bling": Kelly who was married to an international crook and is now dating an emotionally abusive actor named Andrew (who is also the Red Power Ranger), Kim Lee who from most cosmetic surgeries looks just like Kylie Jenner, Cherry who despite She already has two children still waiting for her boyfriend to propose to her (extramarital pregnancy is very unacceptable in Asian culture) and a guy named Guy Tang who looks like a plastic surgeon is out of control and no one understands why he hangs out with the guys (except to do shame of course).

In short, "The Bling Empire" is a perfect docu-reality-trash that will manage to annoy, amuse, amaze and most of all pass the time with fun.

Remaining Championship (Best Leftovers Ever!)

If it is already a food reality that is suitable for this period then it should be dealing with leftovers.

This is a particularly cute format where three contestants with good kitchen skills plus, get leftovers left in the fridge and are required to make new dishes from them in two varying rounds.

I want to believe that it is not really leftovers because otherwise it is something disgusting and a bit unhygienic, but the idea is great - orders from restaurants have become a substitute for many for the culinary entertainment experience, and with the money we spend on this food, why not enjoy it to the end?

In the first round the goal of the contestants is to combine as much of the leftovers in the fridge as possible within the new dish they will prepare, and in the second round the challenge is to prepare a dish from a particular cuisine (Italian for example).

The winner of both rounds receives a nice prize of $ 10,000 and the title of "Remnant Champion".

The host of the show is Jackie Tohan, who will be familiar to "Glow" viewers, along with British chef Sherger and culinary oasis David Sue.

The three of them together create a food reality in a very light atmosphere reminiscent of "I succeeded!"

("Nailed It!") Beloved, only with people who know what they're doing.

The Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives

After addressing the Asian audience, it was time for Netflix to give work to the Indian audience as well.

"The Wonderful Life" is about the lives of Nilam, Mahif, Ahavana and Sima - four women of Bollywood stars who are very well known, all of whom have social and family ties.

Unlike "The Bling Empire", "Bollywood" is a much more conservative series reminiscent of the first seasons of the beloved reality brand "Real Housewives".

the difference?

It manages to give us a glimpse into the wealth culture of the Indian subcontinent, which we know more as a destination for military trips, culinary journeys and a spiritual atmosphere and less as a Hollywood equivalent.

Bollywood culture is not easy to watch.

In the first episode for example we enter the house of Sima (Kotari) who is just getting ready for a family trip to Paris for an important social event.

The family home has a housewife who speaks Hindi while Sima and her friend talk in English, and the class differences between the group are noticeable in a way that will make even the strongest of us cringe in front of the screen.

On the other hand, the girls of "Bollywood" are still mostly busy with their family and friends according to the traditional society in which they live, and are not only busy with shopping (don't worry, there are plenty of that too).

A Queen Is Born

For many viewers, Netflix has become the home of "Raw Pool's drag race" - Raw Pool's successful reality empire that has already captured many fans in Israel and around the world.

Netflix in Israel only broadcasts the older seasons of the show, while the rights to the new seasons are with yes, so Netflix subscribers with a penchant for drag created a small gap.

Amateurs can make up for it with "A Queen Is Born", a docu-reality that combines racing and drag, "Queer Eye" and "The Makeover" with Orna Datz.

This is a strictly Brazilian production led by drag queen Gloria Grove and Alexia Twister, who potentially take drag queens under their wing and help them build their stage persona, or simply - take the queen out of them.

This is a very cute format that is all about empowering and positive discourse, there is more here than touching the LGBTQ discourse and an opportunity to get to know the drag community of Brazil.

The Floor Is Lava

Okay, let's start with the fact that the floor in this track is not really lava and we (still) are not in a place where reality contestants are burned alive.

After marking V for this mild anxiety one can move on and enjoy this endearing amusement, whose main strength is in the rather cool production design that makes ordinary rooms look like their floor is flooded with hearts, and looks like a deliberate tribute to the Indiana Jones movies.

Each episode takes place in a different room - a bedroom, basement, kitchen, study and so on - and has other obstacles, but the essence of the "burning track" is mostly to laugh.

Do not expect the extreme version of "Ninja", we are more in the beloved "Wipeout" atmosphere, where you are just waiting for funny stumbles from the competitors.

Unlike "wipeout" here the contestants compete in groups of three, which have to cross together the menacing path from one end of the room to the other.

The prize?

Ten thousand dollars and not to be eaten alive by her heart.

Not bad.

The "Bridgerton" twist is surprising, but does it also make sense?

Voices of Fire: Gospel from the heart

Where are the reality singing competitions headed after "The Singer in the Mask"?

We seem to have already seen every trick and stick possible: from swivel chairs, through judges who are mega-stars in their own right, to group competitions and even reality of songwriters, but it turns out there are still places we haven’t visited.

A church for example.

"Gospel from the Heart" is a slightly different reality competition, led by Farrell Williams - an international pop and hip-hop star who has touched on musical reality in the past and this time joins David Ezekiel Williams, who is not only his musical inspiration but also a church bishop and head of the church choir.

Together with a team of experts in the gospel genre, they try to build the best choir in the world, while having a long series of open auditions and inspiring stories (of course).

The fact that this is a church, a place that is foreign to many viewers in Israel, may create a certain reluctance, but the truth is that the gospel music in the series is simply wonderful and the talents are especially tremendous.

Yes, there is no denying the spiritual religious dimension that exists in discourse at times, but if you concentrate on music there is a good chance that you will find it particularly enjoyable.

Dream Home Makeover

And we will end with a reality that also fits like a face mask in the corona period - home design.

Yes, as part of the never-ending DIY trend of the past year in which we learned to do everything ourselves (diseases up to building a hydroponic garden on the porch), home design has also taken up a significant part of our lives.

Shea and Sid McGee (probably the two sweetest people you've seen on screen) are an American couple who come to the homes of families across America, and design for them their dream home according to their needs and budget.

In "Dream of a Home" they try to emphasize that this is not just a renovation for the rich, and that you too can get great ideas for your home by watching the program.

I say it's worth taking this statement on a limited warranty, because there's a chance that after watching the show you will feel that your one-and-a-half-room apartment looks a lot less round than you thought.

In any case, if you belong to the Marie Condo genre, the two seasons of "Dream of a Home" are available to watch and will pass the time in the most pleasant way possible.
