SPIEGEL:

Mr. Ametsreiter, half the country is in the home office;

schools are teaching digitally;

even family reunions are only possible online.

Fast internet connections are required for all of this.

Are you benefiting from the pandemic?

Ametsreiter:

We are not profiting from this crisis.

The income from roaming, for example, has almost completely disappeared due to the limited travel.

But our networks are the basis for many people to stay in contact.

This is why data traffic is booming and we are glad that our networks were able to cope with the rapid increase after the first lockdown.

SPIEGEL:

Does that sound like you were surprised yourself?

Ametsreiter:

No, but we would never have dared voluntarily to take such a test or to send our entire call center to the home office.

SPIEGEL:

At the beginning of the pandemic, Health Minister Jens Spahn was considering using cell phone data to fight the pandemic.

Does Vodafone provide such data?

Ametsreiter:

No, the local data protection does not allow that.

But I know the system from Austria and in principle consider it an approach that should be thought about.

This could be used to draw conclusions about the mobility of certain groups of people or in certain areas.

For example, it would be possible to track how travelers from risk countries have moved.
