Law and Depression: "The Cops" Continues a Sequence of Successful Israeli Series on a Rotten Establishment

The "Cops" promo (Rainbow 12)

One determined cop and a bit of an outsider goes with his instincts against the whole system to bring justice, with human life at stake and corruption flooding everything.

That sounds familiar doesn't it?

Maybe because you saw it in various nuances within "FMTA", "Missing Case", "Manaich" or "Blackspace" - series that proved that criminal action is the hottest commodity on screen. Now also Keshet 12, which rarely includes original series in prime time, Got a craving, with the new flagship series "The Cops", created by Rotem Shamir and Yuval Yefet ("Fauda"). Not sure it will make you feel safer.

The story of "The Cops" - a somewhat trivial name, admittedly - much less pretentious than its predecessors: Tzachi Halevi is Alon Shenhav, formerly Sharabi, an outstanding detective from the Tel Aviv police who is re-assigned to Nahariya, the city where he grew up and where his parents (Uri Gabriel and Rita Shukron) and the rest of his family live. Instead of the supposedly pastoral town where he grew up, Shlomi Yifrach), a young and ruthless criminal who heads a local but effective criminal organization, who does not hesitate to harm those who should, and no one dares to stand up to him - not even the police.

Fine casting and great acting.

Everyone, above him and on his side, more and less gently recommends Ivory to avoid war, bow his head and leave Ezra for national treatment which of course does not come, but very soon it is too late: the police themselves become a target for criminals, and no one is immune.

When everything becomes too personal, the police force (including Danny Stegg, Eli Finish, Maor Schweitzer and others) is determined to maintain the dignity of the uniformed blues, and the small town becomes a battlefield.

One can guess where this is going (a possible spoiler): the skeleton of the plot alludes to the vengeful police affair that agitated the country a little over a decade ago, in which a group of police officers in Nahariya decided to fight offender Michael Moore with their own criminal tools - leading to an incredible chain of events.

Into the criminal drama joins a personal-family drama, when Shenhav and his wife and the lawyer (Shani Cohen) strive to maintain sanity and professionalism even inside the house, especially when their teenage daughter (Aviv Buchler) tries to acclimatize within a new school and when the hero's mythological ex is also her school principal (Hadar Ratzon-Rotem).

The loneliness of those in uniform

In the latest wave of crime series, "The Cops" belongs to the top of the table: at a fairly slow pace, it features rough heroes and delivers effective action, enjoys high production sets, fine casting and great acting accordingly - even and especially for those not identified as dramatic actors like Finish, Cohen and Shiri Maimon Surprising as an advocate who works for the organization.

Particularly outstanding are the charismatic Halevi and Stegg as policemen who will turn the whole world upside down, as well as Yifrach, who without saying much manages to intimidate the camera through body language.

Even though quite a bit of the cast is familiar from other roles, the actors and actresses are assimilated as deeply into the characters so that the thought of them hardly passes during the viewing.

Want to say: every whip in the series conveys authenticity, which is not a trivial matter, certainly when the direction in which the plot is squinting is almost surreal.

This is also reflected in the melancholy tone that accompanies the description of the peripheral coastal town, or at least in the way the protagonists of the series who grew up in it speak of it.

The city becomes a battlefield.

At the heart of the story is a tension between the personal and the professional, which unites in the desire to fight the local criminal with all his might.

At the same time, it is not certain that the stimulus action of the "get in them" emotion that the series presses on is the morally correct fantasy for the winter of 2021, after a year characterized by growing tension and suspicion between the police and various publics.

In general, in many ways, "The Cops" continues a larger wave of uniformed series (and can certainly be added to "Lock Hour" and "Tehran"), all of which the organizational decay undermines the purpose of the service and the ability to provide security - and inevitably leads to failure.

The recurrence of this issue raises questions about the Israeli fear of losing personal security, as well as a complete loss of confidence in the security forces' ability to protect civilians from injustice and violence.

The script has other problems as well: at least from the first two episodes, the suspense is consistent, but not sure the story is that interesting.

We have no doubt who is good and who is bad, and meanwhile dilemmas and issues of morality, law and justice do not really come up in their full complexity.

Within this outline there is a plot with few dimensions, which so far has also been quite predictable.

Unlike the other series mentioned, the detective dimension is not particularly significant here either.

Admittedly, we are slowly learning to recognize the depths of corruption, and we will probably discover later a mole on one of the sides - but there is no great mystery here, and until the plot takes place - the pilot is quite automatic.

Either way, as of this moment “The Cops” is actually the only drama right now on the three main channels, and even without the competition it is worth your viewing.

Certainly it is superior to the Torah reality alternatives, and the great trust it has received through the placement during the attractive broadcast is to be welcomed - which may indicate a growing understanding in the local market that there is definitely a demand for original dramatic content on television.

In the meantime, until the next original series, one can hope for the breakthrough of a series of series on completely different topics as well.
