Emmy-winning actress and Tony Sisley Tyson has died at the age of 96, two days after releasing her memoir, "Just As I Am".

Tyson became the first black actress to win an Emmy when she won the award for her role in the 1974 television movie "Miss Jane Pittman's Autobiography."

Three years later she played the mother of the protagonist Conte Kinta in the groundbreaking mini-series "Roots".



In addition, she was nominated for an Oscar for her role in the acclaimed 1972 film Saunder, which described the hardships of a black family in the 1930s in Louisiana.

In 2018, Tyson won an Oscar of honor for her rich and groundbreaking career.

Two years earlier, Barack Obama had received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is considered the highest honor a president can bestow.

Throughout her career, Tyson has starred in dozens of movies, series and plays, including "Fried Green Tomatoes," "Diary of a Crazy Woman," "Help," "House of Cards."

Her most notable role in recent years has been in the series "The Killer's Guide," in which she played the heroine's mother, played by Viola Davis.

For her role, Tyson has been nominated for an Emmy Award five times in a row between 2015 and 2020.

In all, Tyson has been nominated for Emmy 16 times throughout her career, and has won three times.

Her roles on stage earned her, among other things, in 2013 the prestigious Tony Award for the play "The Trip to Bountiful".



Tyson has been married three times - including actor Billy Dee Williams (Star Wars movies) and legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis.
