A News 12 reporter wore black in the studios yesterday, with the intention of expressing sympathy with the fight against violence against women in the background of the murder of Diana Raz by gunfire by her police partner last Friday.

Throughout the current affairs broadcasts, articles and reporters, presenters and presenters, appeared in black clothes.

It is perfectly clear and agreed upon by all opinions that this is a worthy and important step, but is it enough?

Did News 12 really convey a significant message yesterday for the fight against violence against women?

Not really.

Far from it.

First of all, at the symbolic level at least, this gesture was not explicit.

From six in the evening until the end of the edition - hardly anyone mentioned that there was any interest here at all, except for the Marciano Foundation which explained it, in response to guests who raised the issue.

But these, say, are really trivial.

After all, the significant thing is not the symbolic gesture but the presence of this terrible phenomenon and placing it at the center of the agenda.

After all, otherwise there is no point in this whole step.

Still, even if we assume that there was an intention to present the issue more, it is difficult to say that this was felt in the current affairs broadcasts in the evening.

A small tribute.

Admittedly, Oded Ben Ami talked to Raz's cousin, and Lee Naim brought a polo-up to the story later tonight, which aired 40 minutes into the edition - not exactly a central location.

Yes, this is legitimate coverage and the items were decent, but that's the minimum required in terms of agenda.

If the captains of the system wanted to illustrate to viewers the importance of the subject, as the black clothes expressed, then they did not make much effort.

And so, despite all the good intentions in the world, the News 12 tribute was worth very little.

The most significant reference on the subject yesterday was not made by the news editor, but the guests in the "Savings Program" - Secretary General of the Teachers' Union Yaffa Ben David and Chairman Naamat Hagit Peer.

The two were invited to talk about the outline of education in general - but compared to News 12, they put the issue first.

Ben-David began by saying, while Peer mentioned that all the party leaders are now coming to the studios, and that it is worth asking them about this issue as well, and not just about yes-bibi-no-bibi.

And that's exactly what needs to be done.

The media can do much more than it routinely does to flood the subject into headlines and make things move.

Journalists should demand answers from decision-makers, and force them to engage in it in political panels and interviews, at the expense of false spin and campaigns: ask each minister every evening how he intends to advance the fight against the phenomenon, and confront him with why the National Violence Against Women The budget approved for it by the government already in 2017.

With all due respect to symbolic gestures, in the long run - it is also much more important and effective.

Require answers.
