Corona warning app with data donation: New functions in version 1.13

The warning app now offers a voluntary data donation to the Robert Koch Institute. This should give the authority additional information about the pandemic. It's not the only new feature.

With the update to version 1.13, the Corona warning app enables a kind of “data donation” to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

Anyone who has updated the app will be asked the next time it is started whether he or she would like to activate the voluntary data transfer to the RKI.

After approval, the app automatically transmits to the RKI whether it has calculated a low risk or an increased risk, i.e. whether the app displays a green or red tile.

Via the voluntary function, users can also inform the RKI of their own federal state, district or district and their age.

The age is only possible in one of three age groups: 0-29 years, 30-59 years or over 60. This should help the RKI to get a better overview of the pandemic and local outbreaks.

"The experts can thus establish a possible connection between warnings and local incidence and, for example, recognize whether there are more red or green tiles in certain age groups than in others," says a blog post on the update.

The operators of the warning app emphasize that the »data donation does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about individual persons, so that the privacy of the users is preserved.« The data transfer works automatically in the background and can be deactivated again at any time.

Scientific survey after risk exposure

The update to version 1.13 will be available for both iOS and Android.

As of Friday afternoon, it should already be available for download on most phones, otherwise it will be rolled out in the next few hours.

With the update, the app is also made clearer, as the contact diary introduced at the end of December can be accessed more directly via its own tab at the bottom of the app.

Another innovation is a link to a scientific survey that is to be displayed to all users with an increased risk.

The purpose of the survey is to enable the RKI experts to find out more about the behavior of app users before the risk calculation and about their planned behavior, according to the blog post on the update.

With the information, the app should be improved in the future, said the operators of the warning app.
