Pulmonologist on the situation in the intensive care units: "We have patients who have been there since October"

2021-03-05T15:28:35.221Z

Emergency physician Christian Karagiannidis warns of a drastic increase in the number of infections in view of the corona easing. Here he says which patients are at the greatest risk of ending up in the intensive care unit.

SPIEGEL:

Mr. Karagiannidis, the Prime Ministers and the Federal Chancellor have decided to continue the shutdown until the end of March.

But at the same time a patchwork of easing was decided.

You have made model calculations of the conditions under which the intensive care units will become overloaded.

What do you think of the decisions?

Karagiannidis,

47, is Senior Consultant at the Lung Clinic Cologne-Merheim and President of the German Society for Internal Intensive Care Medicine and Emergency Medicine (DGIIN).

Christian Karagiannidis:

We intensive care physicians would have preferred to have waited until April 1st with any easing.

Then we would have been on the safe side when it comes to overloading the intensive care units.

In the best case scenario, despite the significant increase in the number of infected people, which of course there will be when there are openings, a third wave in the intensive care units could probably have been prevented completely - because the saving wave of vaccinations is getting closer.

There is now greater uncertainty due to the loosening that has been decided.

But I think it could remain manageable for the intensive care units.

SPIEGEL:

By the end of March, not only should retail stores reopen, with certain restrictions, but also museums, zoos, theaters and cinemas.

Body-close services should be allowed, as well as sports outside and inside.

Is that not too much?
