Vaccination in Germany continues to be sluggish and the number of infections is stagnating while the first easing begins.

What should help now: earlier vaccinations of school and daycare staff.

The federal government gives these areas top priority in its opening plans.

In some federal states operations are already up and running again.

Therefore, the vaccination should now also go faster here.

The first federal states have already started, on Friday it started in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

On Friday there were a few hundred employees from primary schools and daycare centers, and many more are to follow.

This is made possible by a change in the vaccination regulation, which has been in force since Tuesday and has upgraded these people to the second vaccination group.

Kathy Wienecke, kindergarten teacher and daycare manager:

»I have to say that you are more relaxed about the whole situation.

We are all parents too, and of course we are also afraid for our children, are afraid of infecting them ourselves, are afraid of a serious course of the disease. "

They all get the vaccine from AstraZeneca.

On the other hand, there has been a lot of skepticism in recent weeks because it is apparently a little less effective than others.

Numerous people turned down the vaccine, so many doses were simply left lying around while the vaccination rate is far too slow.

Was the daycare manager also skeptical?

Kathy Wienecke, educator and daycare manager:

"In the beginning, yes, because you follow the media and some things were reported in the media in such a way that it is a bit vague, no, that it is a second-class vaccine. And We got into conversation with the doctors again and they calmed us down completely, gave us excellent information. But we also received information sheets from the Diakonie, where we said, of course, we would be vaccinated.

One reason why teachers were already on the line: So far, the Standing Vaccination Commission has not made a recommendation to give the AstraZeneca vaccine to older people - because not enough data was available.

Stiko has now adjusted the recommendation - it now also applies to older people.

The vaccinations of school and daycare staff could of course slow this down a bit, if the over-80s from group one are now also planned for AstraZeneca.

But precisely where the AstraZeneca vaccine is left behind, you have a good chance of a quick vaccination - and at the latest when the first group is through.
