LE FIGARO.

- In what context can epilepsy lead to metamorphopsies?

Fabrice BARTOLOMEI.

-

Rather than talking about epilepsy, I prefer to talk about cerebral arrhythmias which correspond better to what is happening in the brain.

If these disorders affect the visual areas which are very large (in 40% of the brain), visual hallucinations ranging from elementary flashes to more complex phenomena (hallucinations of objects or scenes) or visual illusions (deformation of objects, loss colors, darkening, haze in front of the eyes, etc.) may appear.

There are often associated motor signs: eye deviations, eyelid twitching, possibly impaired consciousness and electroencephalogram (EEG) abnormalities.

What is the support based on?

After a classic assessment (EEG, imaging), the doctor offers treatment as in any focal epilepsy: an antiepileptic such as lacosamide, levetiracetam, etc.
