As the proponents of nuclear energy have repeatedly said for many years, the greater death toll from the disaster of March 11, 2011 in Japan is linked to the consequences of the earthquake and tsunami more than to the nuclear accident in Fukushima.
Ten years after the disaster, the macabre count is final.
The earthquake and the tsunami caused 18,500 deaths.
While the post-accident account, linked to the nuclear power plant, totaled 2,317 dead in Fukushima prefecture, according to a recent report.

But, contrary to popular belief, these deaths are not linked to exposure of populations to radioactivity.
"There are less than ten Tepco employees whose illness has been recognized as a possible link with the nuclear accident and who have given the right to compensation,"
explains Dominique Laurier, epidemiologist at the Institute for Radiation Protection and Safety nuclear (IRSN).
