Road test: Hyundai buys the new one
Kona's 1.6 turbo engine initially provided 177 hp, more than any equivalent crossover. The facelift slightly refines the design of the body, and increases the horsepower to 198. We went out to check who needed it, and what else was renewed?

Buyer is Hyundai's urban-sub-compact crossover, nestled between the little Venio and the family Tucson.
The Hyundai Kona came to us in early 2018 and has since undergone some important changes;
The first models came in a 4X4 propulsion that wasn’t really meant for terrain, given the stiff suspension calibration and modest ventral spacing;
Was there a Korean attempt here to produce a type of GTI on heels?
In 2019 a more modest 2X4 version arrived and later a hybrid version was introduced, followed by a pure electric one.
We will return to the electrified versions, but today we are examining the petrol version that received a subtle facelift, and the engine reinforcement.
Prices have risen by NIS 1,000 and start at NIS 128,000 for the 'premium' version, up to NIS 138,900 for the test vehicle with a 'writers' finish.
We went out with the 'writers' to the spectacular Hula Reed, which these days is full of white-winged pelicans.

Improving performance
The exterior design was one of the salient advantages of a first-generation buyer;
The muscular Jeep was very noticeable, at least until the arrival of the 2008 Peugeot which featured an almost futuristic vehicle.
The facelift has refined the buyer's nose, but I'm not sure if he benefited from it;
The main receiver has been reduced and the lower receiver has been enlarged, the upper receiver has been eliminated and the overall shape is softer and more aerodynamic.
The result is softer and more flowing, but lacks the aggressive nature of the original design.
The rear lighting units have been softened in cleaner lines.
It even grew a bit - on the same wheelbase 4 inches were added to the chassis.
The trunk has increased by 13 liters.
The test car indulges in LED lighting and in the end it is a young and playful crossover, suitable for urban customers.
The buttocks were also smooth and still, less loud than the outgoing model (Photo: Rami Gilboa)
black box
The Hyundai Kona's cabin has never been one of the brightest there is;
It is made of black and hard-to-touch plastics, devoid of the inspiration and refinement that characterizes some of the European competitors.
The other side of the coin is simple, clear human engineering, which is unsophisticated.
There are physical dials to turn on the air conditioner, intuitive switches for the sound system, ergonomic switches on the steering wheel, everything is predictable and you do not have to rummage through the depths of menus.
The multimedia monitor has grown from 7 to 8 inches, and in front of the driver is a 10.25-inch digital dashboard.
The digital indicators keep the design simple and clean, with a display that changes according to the 'economical', 'normal' and 'sporty' driving modes.
At the 'Writers' level we also got a wireless charging pad, a smart key, full pairing for smartphones, and a black-painted roof.
Get in black the, the outgoing model with a powerful and prominent front (this is the current hybrid).

The space in the front is quite reasonable, in the back a bit tight for bulky passengers, certainly three.
Overall, the space is fine for a compact crossover.
The safety system is complete and includes autonomous braking, lane departure correction and driver fatigue warning, a "dead zone" vehicle warning and a cross vehicle in reverse.
Cruise control is not adaptive, too bad.
The digital dashboard is eye-opening, allowing you to change the colors of the display.

How many horses does a human need?
The outgoing engine provided 177 hp and 7.5 seconds from zero to 100, which is above and beyond what is expected in a popular urban crossover. To get a proportion, we will tell you that crossovers that accelerate to 100 km / h in 7.5 seconds cost around 280,000 shekels (Audi Q3 40 , BMW X2, Cherokee Limited, Volvo XC40, etc.). This is also a respectable figure for crossovers that cost over 400,000 (aka Range Rover Evoque, Mercedes GLC, and more).
It is quite clear that the outgoing buyer had no problem of lack of power.
It has a naughty charm (Photo: Rami Gilboa)
The problem is that the existing alternatives to the 1.6 turbo engine are a 1.0-liter 3-piston supercharged gasoline that delivers 120 hp or an atmospheric 2.0-liter. These are weak alternatives for a buyer weighing over 1,400 kilograms, so he will continue to come to us with the 1.6 turbo supplied Increased to 198 horsepower and 27 kg, no less and no more.
The addition is impressive, though not really necessary.
There is also an effort to improve fuel consumption, as evidenced by the acceleration figure, which rose from 7.5 to 7.7 seconds.
The 7-speed gearbox remained dual-clutch.
On the right, a supercharged 1.6-liter gasoline, 198 hp. On the left, the hybrid engine, 141 horses is enough (Photo: Rami Gilboa)
The road test reinforced the message inherent in numbers;
Hyundai Kona's initial leap is not brutal but after half a second of hesitation, the turbo fills up with wind and vigor.
The engine roars, the buyer flies forward, gaining speed in a way that will make fun of its natural competitors.
The 7-speed gearbox provides excellent intermediate accelerations, no fear of overtaking.
Good news awaited us in the fuel consumption department.
The previous buyer was a serious glutton, and the new one significantly improved fuel consumption.
In long-distance driving at the rate of traffic, we easily spent 12 or 13 miles per gallon;
A calm return from the Hula Reservoir we got of 15 miles per gallon, which is a significant improvement over the outgoing model.
Space capacity is very limited, this is an urban crossover (Photo: Rami Gilboa)
Road customs
The more the buyer can beat prestigious competitors in the "acceleration to the shekel" section, the less impressive it is in terms of refinement and ride comfort.
The renewed buyer is quieter and more pleasant than the previous one, isolating us from road noise.
The ride comfort has been significantly improved, but it is still not at the level of competitors like 2008, Comic and others.
I have no doubt that part of the problem lies in the excessive 235/45 R18 tires, which impair comfort and fuel consumption.
Ride comfort is reasonable at long-distance speeds, less good in city battalions.
The cabin is quite gloomy, useful but uninspired.
Human engineering is simple and clear, the multimedia monitor grows to 8 inches (Photo: Rami Gilboa)
In terms of road behavior, the buyer is ‘okay’, no more than that.
Engine power challenges the grip of the front tires, and impairs the steering feel.
The body's bending is reasonable and controlled, but there is no 'car for the driver' here, despite the steroid engine.
Those who want a sporty buyer will have to wait for the arrival of the N model, which will be armed with a 2.0-liter 247 hp engine, and road behavior appropriate to the sporty N version.

Hybrid savings
Although fuel consumption has been improved in the current model, a buyer is not as economical as its direct competitors.
For the benefit of economy-conscious drivers and planet-keepers, we took the Hyundai Hybrid Kona for an impression round.
It has a 1.6-liter 105 hp engine and another electric motor with a power of 43.5 hp.
The combined power is 141 hp and 27 kg available.
This is a perfectly reasonable power for such a vehicle, with 11.2 seconds from zero to 100;
Engine performance is not comparable to the 7.7 seconds of the petrol version but they are perfectly adequate, and electric power is available at all times.
Economical 205 / 65R16 tires improve ride comfort, these are tires that I would be happy to see in the powerful petrol version as well.
Hybrid in the new form, will arrive in just a few months (Photo: Rami Gilboa)
The hybrid system is identical to that of the popular Ionic, providing astonishing fuel consumption.
On a fast intercity ride, the hybrid buyer spent over 19 miles per gallon.
This is an excellent figure, but the urban consumption was even more surprising - 21-23 kilometers per liter, in the urban hell of south Tel Aviv.
This is an excellent consumption, which justifies the addition of about NIS 8,000 for the price of a parallel gasoline version.
The average driver will recoup the investment within two, two and a half years - if you are not dying for accelerations and tire burning, there is no reason not to go for the hybrid.
seemingly.
The business is very simple here, positively due to the simple human engineering, negative due to the cheap atmosphere in the booth (Photo: Rami Gilboa)
The problem is that the hybrid buyer only comes in a pre-facelift configuration ... it does not bother me in terms of design, but the new model is much more refined.
The importer said that the hybrid buyer will arrive in a stretched version, only in about a year.
This is a pity but we will emphasize that the inferiority of the previous body is especially noticeable outside the city.
A distinct urban customer will be able to find their happiness with a hybrid buyer, even today.
Since the launch of the hybrid model, 2,185 hybrids have been sold in Israel, and only 1,230 petrol models.
Now the picture is a bit tangled, with the hybrid only available in the previous body configuration.
The all-electric version will not be imported to Israel at all, because its price will be too high.

Road test: Hyundai buys a hybrid

Summary
For a strong brand like Hyundai, buying is not a hysterical sales hit (at the level of the Ionic or Tucson).
Despite this, 6,715 buyers were sold in Israel, and the new model shows a significant improvement.
The design is a matter of taste and the buyer remains a playful and young-looking vehicle, suitable for urban consumers.
The improvements to the new version go far beyond a classic facelift, as it also improves engine performance, fuel economy, and ride refinement.
Hyundai Buyer does not have the refinement of some of its European competitors but it can wink at consumers who believe in the Korean brand, and is much more civilized and economical than in the past.
The most economical hybrid version offers a more stylish hybrid solution than the bourgeois Ionic.
