It all started around January 20 at the CHU Henri Mondor in Créteil, one of the four genetic sequencing platforms responsible for monitoring the evolution and emergence of variants in France.

About 1000 samples are sequenced there each week.


We had to sequence samples from 4 patients from the same cluster, three of whom were CHU staff

", reports Professor Jean-Michel Pawlotsky, virologist, head of the biology and pathology pole of this hospital.

We then realized that it was a different mutant from those we already know.
