"The demolition of a civilian home must look like a war crime."

Presenter and comedian John Oliver devoted the opening minutes of his weekly program on HBO, "Last Week with John Oliver," to the ongoing crisis in Israel and Gaza and East Jerusalem. Oliver described the chain of events, from Israel's intention to evacuate Arab families from Sheikh Jarrah in favor of Jews to missiles fired by Hamas at Israel. The presenter made it clear that a broad context is needed to understand the events and he does not intend to shorten the history or offer a solution, but added that even in this little there are some things that are simply wrong.
"One side has suffered 10 times more casualties, which indicates both the severe power imbalance here and that this fact is often obscured by the way we choose to talk about it," Oliver said in his program.
"Israel has an 'Iron Dome,'" Oliver explained. They hit their targets, including a house in a refugee camp, a building of the Al-Jazeera news agency, and a 13-story office and apartment building. "Civilians must be seen as a war crime, no matter if you send a warning in advance."

"They have been living under a suffocating siege for 14 years, and in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Palestinians are actually controlled by a kind of apartheid," Oliver added.
"This is an assessment that has been echoed by human rights organizations, both international and Israeli. Life in Gaza is difficult even when not bombed, and the US government has implicitly signed the cruel hard line taken by Israel."
