Bundestag election: What a defamation election campaign does

2021-06-02T22:08:40.361Z

Angela Merkel recently warned of a Germany that is like the US under Donald Trump. Parts of the Union are now working on this development themselves. That is as fatal as it is absurd.

CSU General Secretary Blume: Keeps Greens "at their core" for "left ideological party"

According to a study published this week, the global average temperature could rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial values as early as 2025.

Courts in Germany and the Netherlands, investor representatives from the oil companies Exxon and Chevron are calling for more and faster CO2 reductions.

Hans-Georg Maaßen, CDU candidate for the federal election in 2021, says: Whether climate change is man-made is "according to all I know, scientifically controversial."

»Toxic for Germany«

There is an amendment to the program party conference of the Greens.

A group of party members wants the title of the program “Germany.

Everything is in. ”Shorten to“ Everything is in ”, partly because the title of the AfD party program“ Germany.

But normal. «Reads.

The request will be denied.

CSU General Secretary Markus Blume then declared that the Greens had "a disturbed relationship with the fatherland."

That is "toxic for Germany".

Straw men, be careful

In Germany, the Greens are currently ruling in two federal states in coalitions with the CDU: in Baden-Württemberg and Hesse.

Both coalitions are already in the second round.

CDU general secretary Paul Ziemiak told the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" that the Greens wanted "a left republic" and "unpredictably turn everything upside down."

In the Green election program it is stated that they want to »make short-haul flights superfluous by 2030 by massively expanding the railway«.

Friedrich Merz lets his team tweet: "The list of bans on the Greens is getting longer and longer."

The party wants to "abolish" short-haul flights, and whether vacationers should "go to Mallorca by cargo bike" in the future?

Otherwise, jokes with invented forms of gendering are among Merz's favorite topics.

The account relies on Kulturkampf as a core topic.

Elsewhere on the Internet things are much rougher: the Instagram account "CSU.memes", which is not officially linked to the party, distributes funny pictures with texts of this caliber: Annalena Baerbock in the transport container of a cargo bike.

Headline: "The only means of transport that is permitted under the medieval rule of Annalena Baerbock".

Or Baerbock as a Trojan horse, smuggling hammer and sickle into the Chancellery.

High cringe factor

That, in turn, fits in with the officially announced assessment of CSU General Secretary Markus Blume, who considers the Greens "at their core" to be a "left-wing ideological party" that not only belongs to Germany, but also to "the state and property" have a disturbed relationship.

In the official meme account "connectcdu" the jokes are more harmless.

There are jokes there about Anton Hofreiter's hairstyle or about the vague memories of the time "when the SPD was a serious competitor".

For many, the account is a source of foreign shame humor.

Overall, the impression arises that parts of the CDU / CSU, led by General Secretaries Blume and Ziemiak, would like to try out an election campaign based on the "US Republicans light" model with constant accompanying music from the Secretary General of Hearts, Friedrich Merz.

An election campaign that relates less to one's own positions and more to defamation of the party that has been identified as the main opponent.

In doing so, one does not hesitate to submit to this party again and again positions that it does not represent at all.

A straw man election campaign is being carried out, so to speak.

This strategy culminates in the repeated thesis that if the Greens win the election, socialism will probably be reintroduced in Germany, or at least something like that.

All of this is recognizable nonsense, but that is not the biggest problem.

Germany is just not the USA

Chancellor Angela Merkel recently warned in a conversation that "at some point the climate deniers might have a majority" in Germany.

This is very unlikely for many reasons, not least because as early as 2019 85 percent of Germans were of the opinion that the government was "not" or "not doing enough" enough to combat the climate crisis.

At the same time, however, there is now at least one Bundestag candidate in Merkel's own party who still does not want to admit the fact that humans are responsible for the rise in temperature.

In truth there are probably more.

Merkel went on to say that "yes, it was seen that the United States of America then failed as an actor at the highest political level under President Trump for four years."

But rather not blood-drinking child molesters

This comparison with the USA under Trump gives a deep insight, and it marks the second problem of the campaign strategy of "defamation and disinformation": the political system of the USA (and also the media system there) cannot be compared with ours.

Fortunately, this has so far had a civilizing effect on democratic discourse in this country, but some in the Union seem to be ignoring it.

And so you tweet a picture in which the Chancellor candidate of the Greens has a thought bubble with feces emojis over her head.

It's not quite as blatant as writing down "Baerbock has shit in his brain", but it says the same thing.

Please forgive the expression.

Even more extreme support for this line comes from a completely different direction, probably because of Nordstream 2.

The big difference

In the USA and also in Great Britain, as is well known, there is a majority vote, which almost inevitably leads to a two-party system and thus to a strong social polarization.

In countries with proportional representation, such as Germany or the Netherlands (here a relevant study), there are always parties that rely on maximum polarization.

In this country, this has so far only been the AfD.

These parties are usually the exception in countries with proportional representation.

There is a good reason for that: you don't know whether you might have to form a coalition with your current political opponent after the election.

So it's better not to portray him as a horde of blood-drinking child molesters.

Manageable options

According to the current status, the coalition options for the Union after the election look rather manageable.

A black-red-yellow coalition seems likely to be rather unattractive, especially from the perspective of the SPD.

If you stick to the fact that there is no cooperation with the AfD, you will otherwise only be black-green or opposition.

Neither Markus Söder nor Carsten Linnemann (CDU) want to form a coalition with the Greens as a junior partner, Linnemann fears that otherwise one would "dwarf".

But what if you need the Greens as a coalition partner for a government under Chancellor Armin Laschet?

The biggest problem

The biggest problem with a defamation and disinformation campaign, however, is another: If deception and defamation become the common means of politics, even beyond radical to extremist parties like the AfD, then that destroys the democratic discourse in the long run.

In the USA you could actually see where this is going.

It is up to the election campaigners to nip this development in the bud.
