Should “recreational” drugs be allowed for athletes?

Since the start of 2021, the consumption of cocaine or ecstasy by athletes has been authorized without being considered doping.


Cannabis, cocaine, ecstasy, heroin: since January 1, 2021, the new sports code drawn up by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) allows athletes to use these “recreational” drugs, classified in a new category called “substances abuse ”, without incurring the heavy doping sanctions which were the rule.

Until now, the anti-doping agencies had the objective of dissuading athletes, professionals and amateurs, from consuming certain substances considered to be doping or harmful to health.

In the event of positive urine control, they were sanctioned with a four-year suspension, as for erythropoietin (EPO), which increases the number of red blood cells and improves performance in endurance sports, or anabolic steroids, intended to increase muscle mass and strength.
