Last year Pixar marked the half-jubilee of the release of their first feature film, "Toy Story," which was also the first feature-length feature film ever made entirely in computer animation. Since then, the studios have been making sure to work at a pace of about one long film a year on average.

And so, last weekend, "Luca", the 24th feature film in the studio's glorious history, was released. In the United States, as befits the changes accelerated by the Corona, it is coming up on the Disney Plus streaming service, which is not yet available here, so in the country it is only available on the big screen, in an original version and dubbed copies.

25 years (and also 12, as we know) are a long enough period of time to degenerate and turn around, but Pixar have always done well to reinvent themselves. Although they also here and there sin in sequels, but usually prefer to avoid it, and also often rely on original scripts rather than existing materials. More importantly, each time they embark on journeys in other counties - "Soul", their previous film, was the first of their kind to feature a black hero, and also the first of their kind to take place in the most vibrant cultural volume in the Western world, New York. The sounds and colors of the city.

"Luca", on the other hand, is Pixar's first film to take place in Italy - or rather, in a fictional beach town called Portoroso. In the best tradition, this allows the studios to operate in a sub-genre that they have not yet experienced: dramas about a platonic and / or romantic relationship that develops in a picturesque European town. For example, "Call me by your name" and "Summer 85 '",That many American critics compare to the animated film.

The difference is the question of two sexual and passionate films. "Luca" is obviously much more innocent, at least on the surface, and his plot turns out to be a tale for the whole family. It builds a mythology that in the sea near the town there are monsters, who are afraid of humans - and the people are afraid of them.

Therefore, these monsters prefer to hide at the bottom of the sea, but one young monster is so bored there, that he decides to dare to go upstairs. His name is Luca, and as he ascends to the mainland, he becomes a human being and meets Alberto, who has undergone a similar process.

In their human attire, the two go out to town and connect there with a girl named Julia, who becomes the third wheel in their friendship. Along with it, they are training for participation in the town's annual competition, which includes three stages - cycling, swimming and eating pasta, allowing the film to present the most appetizing noodle eating scene since "Blue is the Hottest Color".

The heroes' initial ambition was to win the competition to win the Vespa, but over time Luca develops other dreams as well.

He likes the human world, and he wants to get to know it better and even travel to the nearby big city, Genoa - which is no coincidence also the addict of the director, Enrico Cassora.

Of course this is not an obvious dream in light of being a sea monster, which puts him and his relationship with his new friends at risk.

Needless to say, Cassarosa and the Pixar team describe it all through charming animation and in a humane, rich and detailed way.

There are messages in the film about accepting the other, there is an indulgence in Italian culture and the unique landscapes of the boot country and there are also a variety of cinematic quotes - from Miyazaki's Japanese pearls to the Hollywood classic "Vacation in Rome", whose poster constantly stars in the background.

There’s also a cute soundtrack, a sub-character of a cat with a captivating look that is set to enter the Pixar sub-character pantheon and enough pasta in a pesto sauce to make you run to Walt right at the end of the viewing.

But in this pasta, if it is possible to return to it for the third and penultimate time, also lie the weaknesses of the film.

The director himself is an Italian, after all, so maybe it's not local to comment on how he presents his culture, but the fact is that the filmmaker does it with all possible clichés - on the culinary level and on every other level.

This move is typical of the entire film.

Like Luca, who is reluctant to dive back to the bottom of the sea, he too remains quite superficial on a visual, scripted and, above all, emotional level.

In the last six years, Pixar have made three of the most exciting films in their history - "The Voice in the Head", "Coco" and "Soul", but "Luca" is not exciting at all.

True, the protagonist here goes through a journey of self-discovery, but in cinema as in life, in order for happiness and transcendence to be real, one must also face worry and despair, and almost no negative emotions in this careful and childish film.

The heroes are too similar to each other.

True, it's clear Pixar can not sail here to distant instinctual districts as in European quality dramas, but in previous films the studio has found the highway between candy for the whole family and something a little deeper, and here he seems unwilling to get there. The dangers facing the heroes seem rather minor, as do the temptations they face. When the biggest attraction in the film is Vespa and the biggest antagonist is an arrogant Italian boy riding it, it's hard to excite the audience too much.

Another problem, to me, is the characterization of the characters. The two boys are too similar to each other, and so are the adults around them. This makes it difficult for us to differentiate between them, and makes it difficult for the film to develop the conflicts.

Pixar usually know what they are doing. It seems that in the first place they did not plan for this film to be declared another masterpiece of theirs and win an Oscar. They probably acted intentionally on a relatively low profile, creating it mostly for functional reasons, to fill Disney Plus with some more quality content.

Even on a mediocre day, Pixar is better than most other studios, and "Luka" is of better quality than most of the content currently available, in streaming or in the cinema - but apart from encouraging tourism to Italy and selling pasta and pesto sauce, it does not have much.
