Nadav Lapid after winning the Cannes (Avner Shavit)

After the historic win last night at Cannes, landed today (Sunday) the staff of the Israeli film "knee" to Ben Gurion Airport, and held a press conference zoom.

Recall Lapid's film won the Jury Prize last official competition of the Cannes Film Festival - an achievement that no Israeli film not previously noted. the award is part of the "Moria", the acclaimed film director and Irastkol Thai Afitz'tfong. "I am proud to share this award is to me the greatest director that day," the filmmaker said today.

Lapid asked about remarks Of Jury Speaker Lee at the official press conference after the ceremony. The American director was asked why he gave the award to "The Knee", and replied: "What Lapid did was brave. He talks about Israel and the bad things I know are happening in it. This is a country that if you say something bad about it, something bad can happen to you too. "We felt the need to encourage his courage. This is a film that should be seen."

"I really like Spike Lee's films, but refuse to take responsibility for every word that comes out of his mouth," the director replied. "Personally, I have never walked the streets in fear. I have never said in any international forum that I feel fear. However, there are people in the State of Israel who are afraid and have reasons to be afraid. As of today, these are not Israeli Jewish filmmakers. Personally, I I really do not like the situation where people create games by being political or persecuted exiles, and it goes without saying that this will be the case. This is not something we should celebrate, this is the reality that should be. However, we all know that artistic freedom and freedom Art has found itself facing pressures and reduced freedom of expression. What is most dangerous to me in this process is that they create self-censorship, they create concerns for both the creators and the actors who give the funding, and this is a dangerous situation. Personally, when I receive funding from the stateAnd precisely because of this - my duty is to tell one hundred percent of my truth. "Everything else, any reduction and compromise will be a lie and there will be disrespect towards those who supported me, because those who supported me supported me to tell my truth."

Lapid received the money to produce the film from Germany and France, and chose not to submit the script to the Israeli funds.

Only after the end of the filming, he received one hundred thousand shekels from them to complete the production, out of a total budget of five million shekels.

"I did not submit the film to the funds at the time because I was afraid that the script would be leaked into the wrong hands, and then his chances of being photographed would be harmed," he admitted.

"There are many ways to stick sticks in the wheels: photo permits here, photo permits there. Therefore, we decided to wait until the end of the filming."

"The film was screened on the first day of the festival and became a hot topic of conversation," Lapid said when asked about the excitement of winning. "People talked about it as an atomic bomb and a slap in the face, in the positive sense of the word - and then, day after day, films by great directors arrive, at an unprecedented festival that actually unites two years of cinema because of the Corona break. "We are proud of our achievement. I hope that winning will give me more freedom and more courage to go as far as I can with cinema and art."

This is the first time in more than a decade that an Israeli film has won an award in the official competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The previous winner was Joseph Cedar, who picked up the statuette for best screenplay thanks to "Footnote" in 2011. In general, Israeli wins at one of the three largest festivals in Europe are not something that happens every day. The only ones to do so in the last decade were Cedar, who in addition to the Cannes Prize also won the Director's Award at the Berlin Film Festival for "Beaufort"; Shmulik Maoz, who won the Golden Lion in Venice for "Lebanon" and the Silver Lion at the same festival for "Foxtrot", and Hadas Yaron who won the Italian Festival for the Lead Actress Award for "Fill the Void".

Lapid was born in Tel Aviv in 1975.

After his military service, he wrote in the city's sports section.

Its editor was Ari Pullman, who directed "Waltz with Bashir" and himself starred in European festivals.

He published a book called "Keep Dancing" and studied cinema with Sam Spiegel.

His first feature-length film, The Cop, was directed in 2011 and has won awards at international festivals, most notably Lucerne.

His second feature film, "The Kindergarten" was screened in 2014 at the Cannes Film Festival, and enjoyed great international acclaim.

Among other things, it served as the basis for a reworking English-speaking remake that came out two years ago.

In 2016, Lapid directed a 40-minute film called "The Diary of a Wedding Photographer" that was also screened at the Cannes Film Festival, two years ago the golden bear of "Synonyms" arrived, and now he is adding another figurine to the title cabinet.

A historic achievement.

From "The Knee" (Photo: Shai Goldman)

The "knee" is named after the knee of Ehad Tamimi, and the mention of the specific body organ refers to the statement of Bezalel Smutrich, mentioned here in his name many times. At the time, the MK tweeted (and was therefore blocked from Twitter) that the Palestinian girl "had to snatch some bullet in the patella of the knee." When asked about the matter today, Lapid declared - "I do not care if Smutrich watches the film."

The protagonist of "The Knee", apparently Lapid's alter-ego, is a film director played by Avshalom Polak, who wants to direct a film about Tamimi. Meanwhile, he goes out to the prairie to talk to the audience about his work at an event of the local and government cultural club, and there meets a rather young and junior clerk, played by Nur Pibek, who turns out to be an obedient servant of the government and its new guidelines. To get the microphone, he must first sign a document in which he undertakes to speak only on pre-agreed topics. Jewish identity? desirable. The occupation? Absolutely not.

The director tries to fight it, but what is his chance of winning the government intervention?

Equivalent to the chance of beating the cancer that eats his mother, so that the “knee” becomes a lament and parting from two mothers:

his biological

mother

, who is dying;

And his homeland Israel, which no longer allows him to live in it.

The film is expected to be released in Israel in the near future, and the discussion around it will surely continue.
