The criteria

So how do you get yourself the blue verification badge?

Facebook checks a number of factors to determine if you meet the verification criteria.

First, the account should represent a real person, registered business or entity.

In addition, the account must be public and include a biography and profile picture and be active when submitting the application.

Also, the account must represent a familiar character, brand or entity that gets many searches.

"Accounts with verification badges belong to well-known public figures, celebrities and global brands," read the Instagram Information Center.

"We review accounts that are featured in many news sources, and we do not treat sponsored content or sponsored media content as review sources."



Instagram even warns that misleading information can lead to account disabling: "Keep in mind that if you receive a verified tag using incorrect or misleading information during the verification process, we will remove the verified tag and we may even take further action to disable your account."

The application process

  • Make sure you are logged in to the account for which you are requesting a verified badge

  • Click on the profile picture in the lower left corner to go to your profile

  • Tap the menu button (three bars) in the upper right corner

  • Click "Settings" and then "Account"

  • Now, click on "Request Verification"

  • In the relevant box, write your full name and provide the required method of identification (for example: an ID photo in a government-issued document or official business documents)

  • Then, follow the instructions on the screen

Among other things, you can attach to your application links to accounts from external platforms - such as a YouTube channel, Twitter page or a popular Facebook page that you own.

"Once we review your application, you will receive an activity alert up to 30 days after applying to let you know if your account has been verified or not," Instagram explains.
