A Mexican journalist, Ricardo Lopez, was assassinated Thursday in the north of the country, considered one of the most dangerous for the press, said local authorities.
“A few moments ago, journalist Ricardo Lopez from InfoGuaymas was deprived of his life in Guaymas (Sonora).
Code red is activated and the investigation begins, ”the Sonora State prosecutor's office said on Twitter.
At 47, he ran the online media InfoGuaymas.
Last March, he said at a press conference that he had received threats because of his work.
“The press in the port of Guaymas works under threat.
A complaint was lodged with the Attorney General of the Republic, ”he said at the time.
According to the Mexican press, before running InfoGuaymas, Ricardo Lopez had worked for the Televisa channel in Sonora and for other local newspapers.

His assassination comes less than six weeks after that of another journalist, Gustavo Sanchez, shot dead in mid-June in the state of Oaxaca (south).
In May, journalist Benjamín Morales was assassinated in the state of Sonora.
Mexico is considered one of the most dangerous countries for journalists, with around 100 murdered since 2000, including eight in 2020.
More than 90% of these crimes go unpunished, according to press freedom organizations.
