A small blue tear about to dry: Lake Pozzillo, one of the largest bodies of water in Sicily, appears as the emblem of the drought that is affecting Southern Italy, in the image acquired last July 16 by the Sentinel satellite -2 of Copernicus, the Earth observation program of the European Commission and the European Space Agency (ESA).

The image with its bright colors allows you to fully grasp the dramatic situation in which the lake is currently found: at the beginning of July it had a volume of 23 million cubic meters, about 15% of its maximum capacity, approximately 25% less than in July 2020. After all, the basin, located in the province of Enna, is facing the worst drought of the last decade, just like the rest of the island: according to data from the ANBI Observatory on resources water, in July 2021 Sicily can count on a reserve of only 443 million cubic meters of water, 78 million cubic meters less than in 2020.
