Anti-health pass protests: two men sentenced to suspended prison for violence

Two men were sentenced Monday by the Paris Criminal Court to suspended prison sentences for, in particular, violence against the police during the demonstration on Saturday against the health pass.

In Paris, 25 people were taken into police custody at the end of the rallies, marked by some clashes, which brought together 14,250 demonstrators in the capital and 204,090 in France.

Five of them were referred to court to be tried in immediate appearance, in particular for “violence against a person holding public authority”.

Projectiles thrown, kicks and punches

The first, 20 years old, living in Beauvais, is suspected of having, “hidden face” and cap on his head, thrown projectiles at the police, during the dispersal of the procession near the Place de la Bastille .

At the time of his arrest, he gave "kicks and punches" to two gendarmes and showed "very strong resistance", the latter testified on the record.

The young man, holder of a baccalaureate in carpentry and currently in civic service at Pôle emploi, denied any violence, explaining that he "resisted" but without striking after being "roughed up" by the mobile gendarmes.

He was sentenced to one month suspended prison sentence and 400 euros in damages for the two gendarmes.

Cried his father, leaving the courtroom where many supporters of the defendants had taken place.

Apologies at the hearing

The second man, a 46-year-old municipal officer, was appearing for insulting a police officer, kicking him and struggling while handcuffing him.

He admitted having hit "the wrong official", after seeing another shield a woman, and uttering insults during his arrest in response to those of the police.

He apologized to the police officer who attended the hearing, a "very rare" presence underlined by the prosecution.

The forty-year-old was sentenced to three months in prison with a suspended sentence and 300 euros in damages.

The public prosecutor had requested three and five months suspended prison sentence against the two men, with no criminal records.

The other three suspects had yet to appear late Monday afternoon.

Among those in custody, twelve others were brought to court on Monday for possible prosecution.

Another suspect was the subject of a reminder to the law and five procedures were dismissed, according to a count from the Paris prosecutor's office.

The case of two minors was transmitted to the public prosecutors of their place of residence.
