Car care is a serious issue and has safety implications, these must be performed by professionals equipped with training, knowledge and appropriate tools to perform the job.

Even against the scourge called “pirate garages” or “sidewalk garages” it has long been necessary to take a much tougher hand.

But what do you do when the Department of Transportation takes your business one step too far?

According to new regulations that closed yesterday at midnight for public comment and are now awaiting the signature of the Minister of Transport in order to take effect, a series of maintenance operations, in which the most basic in the vehicle will be banned by those who are not authorized to do so.

On first reading the new regulations it is very easy to miss the intent behind them, as they are worded so that on the face of it it seems that the intent is to make it easier for service providers to perform a series of car treatments outside the garage itself, thus saving the garage, hassle and more.

However, the explanatory memorandum states another sentence: "However, unlike the actions listed in the existing regulations, they will only be allowed to be performed by a garage employee who has a license to perform the same type of operation, using a service vehicle, due to the need for a professional to perform these operations."

A look at the details of the actions brings up a list that partly understands the argument to prevent anyone from engaging in them such as "software update and removal of software alerts" but the rest of the list brings up a series of extremely simple actions for which no plausible explanation can be given. .

Among other things, there are: replacement of a filter in the ventilation system, touch screen, window control, door handle, flashlight (excluding headlight), key including remote control, low voltage components of a charging socket except for one related to the battery and more.

A number of objections to the new regulation were published on the government legislation website.

Some have stated explicitly that there is nothing and a half between these safety-raising regulations and that they will primarily serve economic interests, or provide an excuse for insurance companies to waive their liability in the event of an accident regardless of the cause of the accident.

Others noted the fact that most of the list includes parts that do not require extensive knowledge or special tools to perform the work and that "this regulation does not improve road safety as it does not pertain to safety components."

Another point concerns the fact that these regulations will turn some of the actions of roadside assistance organizations into something that is actually illegal.
