Google is expanding the protection of minors in its web search and on YouTube.

One of the innovations announced on Tuesday is that the standard upload setting for videos for users under the age of 18 will be set to "Private".

Your videos are no longer automatically visible to everyone.

YouTube also deactivates automatic playback for children under the age of 18 and also switches on break and bedtime reminders.

Furthermore, children as well as their parents and legal guardians will have the opportunity to request the removal of their photos from the Google image search.

This will not completely remove an image from the Internet, "but we believe that this change will still give young people more control over their images online," said Google in a blog post.

Filtered search becomes standard for minors

The Google location history, which shows the places visited, will no longer be able to be activated for users under the age of 18 in the future.

Until now it was switched off by default for minors, but that could be changed later.

In addition, Google will »activate the Safe Search function for all under-18s and make this the default setting for young people who set up new accounts«.

Safe Search filters "offensive content" from Google search results.

Google referred, among other things, to new legal requirements in some countries, where they want to offer internationally uniform usage settings at the same time.

The aim is to give "minors more control over their digital footprint".

The company is also expanding the safeguards that prevent children from being shown ads from categories that are not allowed until a certain age is reached.

It also blocks ads based on age, gender or interests for anyone under the age of 18.

That should happen worldwide in the coming months.
