"Everything comes back to us, the joy and the pain," sang the Church of the Intellect, and that was also the ambivalent feeling yesterday (Tuesday) in the music industry. On the one hand, they return to us, as in a nightmarish replay, talking about the possibility of another closure, which threatens the industry very much, and the voices of the cultural protest also return. On the other hand, a line that could have aroused more joy had it arrived at another time: the new Zappa Tel Aviv club in the Midtown complex was launched last night with performances by the Church of the Intellect band and Dudu Tessa, and in the presence of Culture and Sports Minister Hili Trooper.

In the background of the opening of the club - the action committee of the culture and events industry and the association of organizers and stage producers announced yesterday "strong opposition to any attempt to impose a crowd restriction on events in green", they said. "Past experience has shown that these limitations have not only not been proven effective - but have led to hundreds of thousands of industry workers losing their livelihoods."

This morning (Wednesday) they will hold a press conference, where they will present the extent of the immediate losses from the imposition of the Corona restrictions.

They added that "just like a year and a half ago, this time too, irresponsible conduct and without any real horizon leads to the liquidation of the industry, which has only recently begun a long rehabilitation process that will continue for many years to come."

We met the Church of the Intellect in the artists' room of the new club, and the band's lead singer, Yoram Hazan, shared with us a frightening moment he experienced during the Corona.

"The year and a half of the corona was completely insane. There was some stage at the height of it that it was not clear that the performances were coming back at all. I thought to myself, okay, what's up, we might not perform again. And it was scary," Hazan said.

"Returning to performances planted optimism. And now the fear returns, it's a kind of roller coaster. I believe this period will be reflected later in our work."

"When you work so long in a row, we never stopped and looked back. We always worked," said bassist Ran Elmaleh, "it's like the universe forced us to stop and look back, just like that. It was really an interesting time. I don't know if it was. "A good or bad time. It was a strange time, that's for sure. After half a year and in quarantine, I suddenly felt like my whole previous life was a distant dream. It was the sad part." Elmaleh added that "the audience is now afraid to buy tickets, afraid to come to performances. Basa, there is no other word to define it, Basa."

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the release of your first song, "Tiles," and next year will mark the 30th anniversary of the release of your debut album, "Things in a Whisper." How do you look at the beginning of this path in a three-decade perspective?

Hazan: "If you think about the first album, it's 30 years of innocence with which it all started. We only came to Tel Aviv then, suddenly releasing an album, suddenly joining a very unclear industry. Since then things have changed completely. We have been performing non-stop for 30 years, and suddenly a year and a half. "They don't show up. It was a complete surprise. This break makes you look inward and think about what you did."

Last year, during the Corona Crisis, you released the single "Losers Street" where Yoram Hazan and Ran Elmaleh sing together, for the first time since their debut album.

Did it whet the appetite to do it anymore?

Hazan: "I always encourage Ran to sing, I hope he will do it."

What did you think about the fact that recently when Caspi canceled all the shows he planned to hold in the country, following the outline of the green mark, announced that he would not appear until all restrictions were removed and said "I will not cooperate with dictatorship and fascism"?

Drummer Daniel Zeiblet: "First of all, I really appreciate Matti Caspi, and his right to think so. If he was not willing to give it a hand, because of his values, and decided not to perform even though he could perform in all sorts of settings, that's fine, it .

Elmaleh: "It's nice to have the privilege of not showing up. We don't have that privilege. No one will support us, and that's what we know how to do. Values go with privileges, you know."

Tens of millions of shekels were invested in the establishment of the new Zappa Club in Tel Aviv, according to Zappa. It is spread over 2,500 square meters, contains two halls, and is intended for both performances and private and business events. After its launch, it will feature international musician Dominic Miller, who is known as Sting's guitarist and has also released nine solo albums. The show had to be postponed to an unknown date.

"We have been planning to build this club for almost three years, and there are things that are difficult to predict," says Assaf Moore, VP of Marketing for the Zappa Group. Unfortunately we are in a kind of replay that we did not pray for.I very much hope that we will not return to the closure. "

Minister of Culture Hili Trooper is here.

What did you ask of him?

"We asked him to understand the situation, and he understands the situation, and promised to do everything to help the world of culture and music. We very much hope that this time the government will reach out and help an entire industry because this time the situation is really challenging."

Minister of Culture Hili Trooper, the new Zappa Club is adjacent to a future light rail station. Which will end first - the long works on the light rail or the spread of the corona and its threat to culture?

"Nobody knows. What I'm convinced of is that even if it takes time for the train to come and even if the corona stays longer - a lot of music will remain after everyone. And that's the power and magic of Zappa - the stubbornness to produce culture and music in very, very difficult conditions. To give back to the Israeli culture that insists on its existence. "

There is a great fear of another locksmith. You can shed light - what is the chance that there will be or will not be a closure?

"It seems to me that we have learned that in front of the corona we need to maintain modesty. I do not know what will happen. I do know that we insist on the principle that culture is the last to close and the first to open, and in the meantime we succeed. In the past culture was closed. In terms of values, a society without culture is a sad society. Two, economically it is a livelihood of tens of thousands of workers. And three, culture today is the safest place in Israel. This is the place that pays the most attention to the green character. You and I are now in a hall that has only been vaccinated, recovering or being tested. So there is no reason to impose additional restrictions on them, so we insist that the green character remain a green character, with no occupancy restrictions, no maximum restrictions. It is not right to blame it on them, it is not financially possible, it is also not right for health. "

The Action Committee of the Culture and Events Industry and the Association of Organizers and Stage Producers have announced an emergency conference and the return of protest, following losses from restrictions on performances and events.

"I understand them, I understand their pain, the damage is really enormous. Culture is not only future damage, it is also present damage. That is why we so insist on keeping them open, to minimize the damage and allow all Israelis to enjoy culture. We are with them in this "We think the culture should be kept open, and in the case of, God forbid, damages - there is a responsibility for the state to take care of them."
