The artist, painter, sculptor and Israel Prize winner Yigal Tumarkin was laid to rest in the Kibbutz Naan cemetery.

Tumarkin, one of the top artists in Israel, passed away yesterday, at his home, after battling an illness, at the age of 87. Dozens of people came to pay their last respects to him.

He is survived by his wife Karnit, daughter Orna by his first wife Naomi, and sons Dor and Yun by his second wife Naama, and many works.

Tumarkin was a diverse artist whose work included sculptures, paintings, drawings, graphics and stage design.

Among his well-known works are the "Monument to the Holocaust and Resurrection" from 1975, which is still placed in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv, the iconic sculpture "He Walked in the Fields" from 1967, and the sculpture "Occurrence" at Tel Aviv University from 1972.

His son, actor Ion Tumarkin, praised him: "Excuse me for talking less about art, there are artists and experts here who will do it much better than me. I can mostly talk about the immense pride that fills me every time I see one of his works, in squares, in museums , And especially in the houses of the people. Works that will continue to be here after him, and the truth - even after. Works that will remind me of him every day, will bring tears to my eyes but make me smile. My father cared for us the best life he could, a life of cultural happiness, So that he would not be short of material either. As a child he made sure to take us on many trips abroad, to the theater in Berlin, to museums in Paris, to every possible gallery in New York. In Germany we slept every time in the Brecht family home, and in Israel we were visited by artists, playwrights, politicians, mayors and prime ministers. A house of culture and art, books, knowledge and discourse, and everything is wrapped in humor and daring. This is how we learned to doubt, ask questions, and make the decisions that are right for us,Even if they are not always in accordance with the conventions. "

"All my life they have asked me, what is it like to grow up with an older father. Every time I hear the perplexity, maybe a little criticism, when discovering the age gaps. Then I will tell you - make children as long as it feels right to you. As long as your loin area works Even if not, it's a solution too. What matters is that you love your children, and invest what you can while you have. True, it's hard to help and feed Dad at a young age, right, it's shit to break up with Dad at 32, but was I Does it matter? No and no. I love my father, I am proud of my father, and I thank him from the bottom of my soul for every moment he could give us. Father, thank you for everything, I love you and I am proud of you. Rest in peace. " .

His other son, Dor, mourned him in tears: "Yigal Tumarkin, our dear father, a playful, sharp, funny and opinionated mind, within a thorny personality and a tough body. Much has been said and said about your genius as an artist, writer and writer. "The invention, the accuracy of the rush, the harsh criticism, the harsh statements. You will be missed by many, and your influence on art and culture will be felt forever. Your amazing works are scattered throughout the Israeli landscape, where you chose to create and live until your last day,

"My father, you were not like all fathers, but you were a wonderful father nonetheless. You taught us to tell the truth without compromise. You taught us to think and criticize everything in depth. You taught us that principles are important than money. You taught us to insist on our place in this world. , And sometimes how not. You taught us that mind and emotion can go hand in hand and create wonderful things. You taught us to love freedom, cultural richness, human diversity, even when these ideas were foreign and strange to the society around us. The relationship between us was never classic. Did not go to parent meetings, did not play football with us. Instead, he taught us about art, physics and math, and took us on trips around the world. He did not understand the computer games we loved but tried occasionally anyway. He did not educate us like educating a child "He just treated us as equals."

"It was not always easy, from the illness in Paris that you got before our eyes, the breakup of the family that led to years of distance, and then a return to closeness because of the cursed illness. It was not easy with others either, , And also because if he did not apologize himself - he probably does not apologize at all "

Of blessed memory.

Tumarkin was born in Dresden, Germany, to Peter Martin Gregor Heinrich Halberg, and at the age of two immigrated to Eretz Israel with his mother, who remarried Herzl Tumarkin.

He began studying sculpture after his release from the army, which led to a glorious and accomplished artistic career, which included alongside art also creating backdrops for plays, including Bertold Brecht's Berliner Ensemble, and films such as Uri Zohar's 'Hole in the Brick'.

Other sculptures and monuments he created are spread all over the country.

Along with the great appreciation he received, Tumarkin often provoked a storm with a variety of abusive and provocative statements, including against the ultra-Orthodox.

For this reason, his winning of the awards was sometimes accompanied by public opposition, and even when he received the Israel Prize, petitions were filed against the decision - all of which were rejected.
