Charlie Watts, the drummer of the Rolling Stones for almost 60 years, passed away today (Tuesday) in London, according to a statement from the musician's family.

Watts is the only one apart from Mick Jagger and Keith Richards who has been a partner in all of the band's studio albums, one of the greatest and most successful of all time.

He was 80 at the time of his death.

The news of his death comes a few weeks after it was announced that Watts will miss the band's upcoming tour in the United States to undergo medical treatment.

Watts, who had been smoking heavily for many years, had previously had throat cancer, and had recovered.

"With deep sadness we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts. He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today, surrounded by his family," the statement said, describing Watts as a beloved family man and one of the greatest drummers of his generation.

"We seek to respect the privacy of family, band members and close friends during this complex time," it added.

Watts joined Jagger, Richards and Brian Jones in January 1963, and the band - whose lineup has changed several more times - has been a resounding success for decades.

Aside from the Rolling Stones, Watts also recorded jazz music.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with the Rolling Stones in 1989, and Rolling Stone magazine ranked him 12th on the list of the greatest drummers of all time.

In addition, he was known for his fashion sense.
