Excerpt from the documentary "Danny Caravan" (here 11)

Anyone who has spent enough time in Be'er Sheva is familiar with the Negev Brigade monument, located on a hill overlooking the city and dedicated to the brigade's fighters who fell during the War of Independence. It is a strange and fascinating concrete structure, inside and out, which has long been not only a memorial site - but also a meeting place that invites many residents for a sunset or picnic. This huge monument is completely integrated into the life of the city.

The monument, like dozens of unforgettable works located in the public space in Israel and around the world, was created by architect Danny Karavan, who died this year at the age of 90. Among the most famous are the White Square and the Culture Square (Habima Square) in Tel Aviv, as well as the beautiful monument to the gypsies. Who were murdered by the Nazis in Berlin, near the Holocaust memorial. Like the Negev Monument, these are works of art that continue to occupy the people around them, for functional, tourist or political reasons.

Accordingly, the interactions between buildings and people are also the subject of the documentary that aired last night (Wednesday) here 11 about the esteemed artist and winner of the Israel Prize, simply called "Danny Caravan" and considered a favorite in the battle for Ophir.

This is not really a biographical film, but a geographical one: it jumps with the artist - very old but also enthusiastic and angry as a child - from work to work he created.

His enthusiasm is contagious.

The film's directors Barak Heiman and Karavan do not talk so much about the works themselves - but mainly about what time has done or threatens to do to them. Neglect, nearby construction, populist politics or a new kind of criticism (e.g. the lack of shade in Habima Square) threaten the artist's life enterprise, which sees how time and forgetfulness also work on the immense monuments he has built. From these is also revealed a touching parable about aging, which also concerns the hero of the energetic and stubborn film.

The camera loves Caravan, a stormy and amusing man who angrily responds to criticism and is enthusiastic about every detail and symbol that has passed under his hands. Most importantly - his infectious enthusiasm for art also catches the viewer.

Precisely because the protagonist is so fascinating, and because he is so important, it is a pity that the film hardly touches on the biography - if only to make it clear to viewers how important and influential it is, but also because the man's life involves a bigger story about this place and its history and culture. His works, Karavan was also among the founders of the Nahal band, and the one who prepared the set for its first performances, for example).

Stormy and entertaining.

Thus, while the film deals relatively extensively with the political contexts of work he planned in memory of Polish Righteous Among the Nations, including interviews with experts, it is a pity that the film does not have interviewees who testify to Karavan's historic place in the Israeli art world.

Although the heritage of the caravan shown in the film speaks for itself, but such an addition could have significantly upgraded it.

However, beyond a nice tribute to an extraordinary character, "Danny Caravan" succeeds in his most important task: to draw attention elegantly and at eye level to the beauty of their works of art and politics - and how vague or sublime at first glance is actually very mundane, relevant to Pain, and affects the environment on a daily basis.

The achievement is several times greater on television - such an impatient medium for art.

Which only intensifies the frustration: how much we lose because the media gives so little space to talk so beautifully.
