The rapper's title and clip, entitled "Hang the Whites", sparked a heated controversy in September 2018.

In the end, he will not have to pay a fine.

Rapper Nick Conrad, who was controversial in 2018 after the broadcast of his clip "Hang the Whites", was finally released on appeal for procedural flaw on Thursday.

"It's a victory, I'm proud of it, I said what I had to say in court and it's a way of moving on," reacts to the Parisian rapper, who assures that he wants to continue to make music despite the controversies.

"It's a victory for us", repeat his lawyers Chloé Arnoux and David Apelbaum, "even if a debate on the substance would have been interesting".

The procedural defect concerned the date of the summons given to the artist on the day of his hearing, which was after the three months of the press's criminal limitation period. A procedural flaw making it impossible to judge the case, according to the Paris Court of Appeal, whose opinion therefore contradicts that of the criminal court in first instance.

Nick Conrad was thus sentenced, in 2019, to a fine of 5,000 euros suspended by the Paris Criminal Court for "provocation to crime".

By his title, he "exceeded the authorized limits of freedom of expression in this singular genre that is rap", then tackled the public prosecutor.

He was also ordered to pay 1,000 euros in damages to two civil party associations, the International League Against Racism and Anti-Semitism (Licra) and the General Alliance against Racism and for the Respect of the French Identity and Christian (Agrif).

The two associations still have the possibility of making an appeal in cassation.

A controversial piece

The clip "Hang the Whites" had triggered an outcry and aroused reactions from associations but also from the government, offended in particular by the words of the song.

"I go into nurseries, I kill white babies, quickly grab them and hang their parents, pull them apart to pass the time entertaining black children of all ages big and small.

Whip them hard, do it frankly, that it stinks of death that it pisses the blood, ”declared Nick Conrad.

Nick Conrad: "I'm not a racist"

"This piece is deeper than it seems (…) I can't deny what I wrote, it touches racism, that's the beauty of this piece, it's still art", had tried to defend the artist a few days later.

“For me, the shock was wanted, necessary, but not at such a level.

People only remember the negative, they surf on it!

», He had justified himself in our columns.
