In the intensive care units in Germany, more people have recently been treated who are sick with Covid-19 despite being vaccinated. According to a report, the RKI calls this development expected.

According to a media report, the proportion of vaccinated corona patients in intensive care units has increased.

As the newspapers of the Funke media group report, 119 of the 1186 corona patients who had to receive "intensive care" in Germany from mid-August to early September were vaccinated against the virus.

This corresponds to a rate of just over ten percent.

In the significantly longer comparison period from the beginning of February to the beginning of September, the proportion of vaccinated Covid patients in German intensive care units was 1.84 percent (210 of 11,419 cases).

In their report, the newspapers cite a response from the Federal Ministry of Health to a request from the left-wing parliamentary group in the Bundestag.

The data come from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

As the Funke newspapers further reported, the increased proportion of vaccinated corona patients in German intensive care units is primarily related to the sharp increase in the number of vaccinated persons overall, according to authorities and experts.

In the meantime, more than 65 percent of the population in Germany have been vaccinated twice against the virus.

According to the report, the RKI explained: “It is to be expected that more vaccination breakthroughs will be recorded over time, as more and more people are generally vaccinated and Sars-CoV-2 is currently spreading again more and more.

This increases the likelihood of coming into contact with the virus as a fully vaccinated person. "

According to Funke newspapers, the Ministry of Health highlighted the protective effect of the vaccination against severe Covid disease.

"The fact is that vaccinations protect and a lack of vaccination protection is the main reason why people with a Covid 19 infection have to be treated in intensive care," the ministry said.

The President of the Association of Intensive Care and Emergency Physicians (DIVI), Gernot Marx, told the Funke newspapers: "The patients with severe and fatal corona courses are in almost all cases unvaccinated." The vaccine breakthroughs with severe courses, however, are still in the single-digit percentage range.

Severe courses in people under 60 years of age

In addition, the vaccination breakthrough mostly affects people whose "immune system has been weakened by chemotherapy or long-term cortisone treatment, or who are older than 80".

The intensive care doctor went on to say: "Unfortunately, we are also seeing more and more people under 60 with severe or fatal courses who are not vaccinated."

In the early hours of the morning, the RKI's new infection statistics for the past 24 hours were also available.

Accordingly, 4971 new infections were reported by the health authorities during this period.

The institute gave the seven-day incidence of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week on Tuesday morning as 65.8.

For comparison: the previous day the value was 66.5, a week ago it was 63.6 (previous month: 80.2).

88 more deaths reported

According to the new information, 88 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours.

A week ago there were 90 deaths.

The RKI has counted 4,318,355 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not detected.

The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days - the most important parameter for a possible tightening of the corona restrictions - was given by the RKI on Monday as 1.58 (Friday: 1.67).

A nationwide threshold value from when the situation can be viewed critically is not provided for the incidence of hospitalization, among other things because of large regional differences.

The previous high was around 15.5 around Christmas time.
