Daniel Craig finished his service as Agent 007 this month, and among the prominent candidates to replace him starred Tom Hardy. In another cultural climate, where he would not have been dismissed as "just another white man", they would probably also have chosen the thriving star, but in the meantime he is required to settle for the lead role in the "Venom" film series.

Venom does not have a tenth of James Bond's media profile, but it's a box office brand as well. Although the first episode of the series received bad reviews, including ours, it made great profits - and inevitably led to a sequel, which came out two weeks ago in the United States and was also a great success, probably relative to the Corona days, and last weekend also hit screens in Israel.

For those who watched and forgot or did not watch at all, we will mention the plot of the first film. Tom Hardy plays a journalist who loses his job, his home and also his beloved, played by Michelle Williams, but gains a new friend - a parasite named Venom, who becomes his surrogate.

The two are forced to live together, and turn out to be a kind of morbid version of the "strange couple."

On the one hand stands the sensitive and idealistic media man, and on the other - Venom, who keeps shouting in a monstrous voice about his desire to devour people.

Even in Tel Aviv it is difficult to find such bad partners for an apartment.

The second chapter describes how the partnership falls apart. Venom goes free and is happy about it, but soon his paths cross again with those of his longtime friend. This happens when the journalist is caught in the net of a serial killer, who reveals a strange fixation towards him, and over time cultivates his own parasite, which is much more dangerous. The only way to stop him would be if the two former partners reunite forces.

It was difficult to define the first film in the series, and even more difficult to define its sequel. Ostensibly, it wades through the waters of Marvel's galaxies, but it's not really a superhero movie, because Venom is a negative superhero image. Defining it as a problematic horror fantasy as well, because the film adheres to the eco-friendly viewing rating of PG-13, and is far from presenting difficult graphic content. It can only be categorized as an action thriller, because it has supernatural elements.

Therefore, dare to raise a head and put "Venom 2" in a seemingly unrelated slot - a romantic comedy.

In the end, through the connection that unites and forms between the journalist and the parasite, the film deals with the importance of the relationship and the life together.

Through the confrontation between the two and the serial killer and who he is trying to store, the pledge also deals with the importance of the symbiotic connection, showing why he is far superior to a non-such connection, and generally stands as a superpower that will withstand nothing.

Most Hollywood movies, as is well known, featured a heteronormative relationship, but "Venom 2" undermines that.

Who said living together has to be between a guy and a girl?

He asks.

They can also be, as seen here, between a human and a parasite.

Back to "Birth Killers."

Woody Harrelson in "Venom 2" (Photo: Film Forum)

"Venom 2" describes it all in a way that is as bastard as it is charming, making it the best romantic comedy in the field right now - and not that the competition is tough. It has a few more degrees: The cast includes Tom Hardy, Woody Harrelson and Michelle Williams, a team that under other circumstances could have housed an Oscar-nominated film. If that's not enough, joins as a reinforcement actress Little Sims, one of the best British musicians of recent years, who contributes a surprising and uplifting guest appearance. Behind the camera was Andy Sirkis, best known as the man behind the golem in The Lord of the Rings, and in "Breathe" he has already proven that he also has a talent as a director.

Alongside this, the film also offers an interesting representation of the character of the psychotic killer.

Harrelson plays him with all the baggage he brings with him from the days of "Birth Killers," and shapes him as a lone man who just wants a sympathetic ear - and a hug.

True, it's not new that Hollywood is compulsive towards serial killers and tends to show understanding towards them, but we have not seen in a commercial hit such an empathetic and sympathetic design of this character.

Despite all this, and perhaps actually because of all this, there is something puzzling about the film.

It is not clear why to waste all these talents and all these ideas, on a hit that seems so eager to get rid of.

It is common nowadays to complain that movies are too long, but "Venom" has the opposite problem - it is too short.

so cute.

The feeling is that we are in a restaurant that does not define itself as fast food, and yet is in a hurry to get paid by its customers. First course, main course, dessert - and hop! Please clear the table. "Venus" is conducted in such a hurry, there is not time to take a breather between replacement of plates and cutlery.

Interest odd Added: Originally called the film "Venom: Let There Be Carnage", loosely translated - "Venom: and there was carnage." The decision to call in Hebrew "Venom 2" actually does him justice and not injustice, because as befits a product that tries to appeal to almost all ages, there is not much carnage in it.

So why call a movie like that and focus on serial killers and murderous parasites, if the ultimate goal is to sell candy to 13-year-olds?

Doesn't it make more sense to find them other and more appropriate content in the first place?

And what’s the point of taking a movie with such content and nailing it into a bracket of rather strict viewing restrictions?

The answer is that Venom movies are box office hits, Hollywood knows what it's doing, and luckily its accountants are not listening to our advice and concerns.

There will be no James Bond, but not terrible.

If "Venom 2" had dared or could go all the way, or at least farther, it could also have been a crazy, cheeky, exciting and really entertaining film.

But unlike parasites who are not ashamed to blush the woodpeckers on their way, the film seeks to eat the cake and leave it intact.

The result is a likable snack that elicits a wide smile, but not much more than that.

Of course this is enough to secure another episode in the series, and the post-credits scene ensures that Venom is only going to deepen his dominance on the field.

Tom Hardy will probably no longer be eligible to play James Bond, but he will no doubt continue to be part of the box office industry for years to come.
