The playwright, author and winner of the Israel Prize for the Yosef Bar-Yosef Theater, died at the age of 88.

Bar-Yosef was born in January 1933 in Jerusalem to an ultra-Orthodox family, sixth generation in Israel by his father, author Yehoshua Bar-Yosef and eighth generation by his mother Zippora. He attended a religious school, and later moved to Tel Aviv. In adulthood, he studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for a degree in philosophy, Kabbalah and English literature. He worked in a variety of fields before becoming a well-known playwright and writer, including as a journalist and editor as well as a remodeling contractor. In his reserve service he served as a military reporter.

He published his first stories in the early 1950s in the literary journal Masa. He wrote his first two books in the 1950s - the collection of stories "Salty Lips" and the novel "The Life and Death of Jonathan Argaman". His first play, "Tora" by name, ended in the Chamber in 1962. Over the years he has written stories and plays and gained recognition in Israel and around the world. His plays have been staged in Russia, Ukraine, Latvia, Brazil, India and Scotland, among others.

In 1983 he won the Israel Prize in the field of theater. The reasons for his choice stated, among other things, that his plays "mostly refer to Israeli types with an Israeli and Jewish social roots and background, which have a certain way of life, tensions and conflicts and the individual's striving for happiness and passionate realization within the community and family." Complex and three-dimensional of characters and types. " Plays of Mr. Bar-Yosef also gained remarkable success outside-to Israel and especially in Russia and Eastern Europe. "

In addition, won the 1986 award for creative writers Hebrew the name of Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, and last year was nominated for Sapphire 2020 for his book" Father, Son "Grandma Dina."

Bar-Yosef was married for three months to the poet Dalia Ravikovitch and later to the poet and literary scholar Hamutal Bar-Yosef.

Their son Dori, who was an outstanding musician, committed suicide from his brother's weapon when he was 16 and a half.

Bar-Yosef wrote about this tragedy in his book because it was "the hard and bitter time in my life."

The Habima reported that "the National Theater, for all its actors, employees and managers, expresses deep sorrow over the death of the writer and playwright Yosef Bar-Yosef."
