Facebook has been under a lot of fire lately, but at the opening of the Connect developer conference tonight, Mark Zuckerberg, founder, CEO and chairman of the company, presented his vision for a new virtual world in virtual and augmented reality, which Facebook calls the Methwars.
Zuckerberg believes this is the next medium to occur, which will become mainstream within 5-10 years.
According to Zuckerberg, it will allow for richer experiences than can be experienced today.
From our home space, through a virtual workplace, to experiences that can also be experienced in the physical world while combining virtual objects and content that will be projected into the real world, this is the metevers.
"Avatars will be just like today's profile pictures, but instead of a static picture - these are three-dimensional and vivid representations of expressions and gestures. They are going to make the interactions much richer than anything possible on today's Internet," Zuckerberg said.

"Instead of typing or pressing, people can experience with their hands, say words, or just make things happen with the power of thought. The devices will not be the focus of attention: instead of interfering, they will give a sense of presence in the new experiences you have, and the people you are with."
Along with Oculus' virtual reality glasses, which are owned by Facebook, the company is building tools that already today allow creators and artists to create content and build objects for the virtual and integrated world that Facebook is planning for us.
Our assessment is that Facebook will also launch a market for the sale of virtual objects, similar to what we see in multiplayer network games or in simulations like Second Life.
