The fourth corona wave has fully hit Germany: According to the Robert Koch Institute, the seven-day incidence rose again massively. The hospitals fear that there will soon be significantly more intensive care patients.

The

seven-day incidence

of new infections has reached the highest level since the beginning of the corona pandemic.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the number of confirmed cases per 100,000 inhabitants and week on Monday morning as

201.1

.

The previous record was reached at the height of the second corona wave

on December 22, 2020 with 197.6

.

The day before the incidence was 191.5, a week ago it was 154.8 (previous month: 63.8) The health authorities in Germany reported

15,513 new corona infections to

the RKI within one day

.

This is evident from the figures that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 04.15 a.m.

On Friday, the number of new infections had reached 37,120, a record since the beginning of the pandemic.

Exactly a week ago the value was 9658 infections.

It should be noted that, unlike a year ago, many people are now vaccinated, and the rate is particularly high among the particularly endangered very old people.

Experts therefore assume that the health system can now withstand more new infections than before the vaccinations, as these protect very well against the course of serious illnesses.

According to the new information,

33 deaths were

recorded across

Germany within 24 hours

.

A week ago there were 23 deaths.

The RKI has counted 4,782,546 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not detected.

Intensive care physicians are again warning of increasing occupancy

The number of

corona patients admitted to clinics

per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days - the most important parameter for a possible tightening of the corona restrictions - the RKI last

stated

on Friday as

3.91

(Thursday: 3.73).

With the indicator it must be taken into account that hospital admissions are sometimes reported with delay.

A nationwide threshold value from when the situation can be viewed critically is not provided for the incidence of hospitalization, among other things because of large regional differences.

The previous high was around 15.5 around Christmas time.

The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at 4,380,000.

The number of people who died with or with a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 96,558.

A special focus is on the serious course of the disease.

Doctors fear a doubling of the corona patients in intensive care units.

Already now, with almost 2500 cases, just as many corona patients have to be cared for in the intensive care units as at the same time a year ago with the second corona wave.

That said Christian Karagiannidis, scientific director of the intensive care register of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive and Emergency Medicine (Divi), the »Augsburger Allgemeine«.

Effect of 2G rules still unclear

In the coming weeks, the number is expected to almost double if the new infections continue to rise as before.

"With an incidence of 300, we expect around 4500 Covid patients nationwide with large regional differences," warned Karagiannidis.

He thinks it is difficult to make long-term predictions about the course of the pandemic.

Based on the incidences, one can predict relatively clearly what will happen in the next few weeks.

"What we can't predict is at what level it will stall," he said.

It is unclear what effect 2G rules and booster vaccinations have or whether the population is changing their behavior.

"We're navigating the fog without GPS right now," Karagiannidis said.
