Digital vaccination certificates: How booster vaccinations are correctly displayed in apps

Those who cannot present a valid vaccination certificate have a hard time at borders, in restaurants and elsewhere. The booster vaccination sometimes causes problems. But there is usually a simple solution.

The passengers had not expected this: on arrival at an airport in Austria, they were initially refused entry into the Alpine republic. And that although they had already been vaccinated three times, i.e. had already received a so-called booster vaccination. But when the border guards checked the digital vaccination certificates submitted via the CovPass app, the vaccination status was displayed as "not fully vaccinated". They were only allowed to pass when the people presented their yellow vaccination cards and were thus able to prove their correct vaccination status.

Problems like these are currently confronted more often by people who have already received a booster vaccination.

In the "Frequently Asked Questions" about the CovPass app of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the question is why a certificate for a booster vaccination is shown as invalid - or why it is not immediately valid.

In the most obvious case, there is therefore an error in the certificate.

If the booster vaccination was the third vaccination, the number 3/3 must be entered in the field »first vaccination / re-vaccination«.

But sometimes this is not done correctly.

If this is the case, you should contact the issuer of the certificate "to have this corrected".

The solution to the problem is even easier if the booster vaccination is the second vaccination - after the first initial vaccination with the vaccine from Johnson & Johnson. In this case, the certificate is correctly labeled with the number 2/2, ie "two of two". The app can then not recognize "whether it is the second vaccination of the basic immunization or a booster vaccination," explains the RKI. Therefore, a two-week waiting period until complete immunization is indicated again. If this is the case for you, simply show the certificate of the first vaccination, because it remains valid and correctly indicates the vaccination status as "complete".

Something similar can happen to those who have recovered who only receive one dose of vaccine to be officially vaccinated and then receive a booster vaccination. "First vaccination / re-vaccination: 1/1" must be entered on your digital vaccination certificate, "writes the RKI. Because »only then can the app display a complete vaccination status. Otherwise, ask for the certificate to be reissued «. If this certificate has been issued correctly, show it instead of proof of the booster vaccination.

If your name has changed in the meantime or the creators have entered your second name for one certificate but not for the other, the certificates will be displayed next to each other in CovPass and you can switch between them by swiping left or right.

In the Corona warning app and the Luca app, however, they are one below the other.
