Road test: Kia Carnival (Gasoline, EX) - Walla! vehicle

2021-11-19T06:45:54.359Z

Kia's 7-seater minivan offers seating for young and old, leaving plenty of room for luggage, and is generously equipped. We already knew that, but how is it in the petrol version?

Road test: Kia Carnival (Gasoline, EX)

The new Kia Carnival is the thin and clear line that goes between "very good" and "excellent" when it comes to 7-seater vehicles.

At the first meeting we drove the fully equipped diesel, now it was time for the entry-level version with the petrol engine

Summary of previous episodes: The current Kia Carnival is not only the only minivan that comes with regular imports to Israel, but also the one that does this thing that makes minivans better than all the tools of its kind we have used to date.

It simply takes, refines and enhances for excellence this minivan recipe invented in 1984 by Renault with the Aspas or Chrysler with the Voyager (which is the motor equivalent of the dispute between the Ofra Haza camp and Jordana Arazi).

Square box, efficient in utilizing the internal space for passengers and luggage, convenient for entry and exit, with a great view of the environment and the road.

Increases to do

Kia was not blind to the sweeping preference that customers have for tools from the testimonials of the Jeeps and crossovers, ostrich because yes it is not hard to see that the carnival has invested thought and attempt to give it a tough and aggressive look with the grille, sophisticated with the light fixtures and probably something to do with the silver plastic decorations below.

As with its brother with the diesel engine the base for the cabin is the same excellent arrangement, in the driver environment smart and useful human engineering, intelligent and accurate dosing between physical buttons and important systems like audio and air conditioning, the rest in touch screen menus.

The EX trim level is the entry-level version, but the instrumentation is almost uncompromising, not that significant (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

There is also a very good level of equipment here, although this is the EX version, which is the entry level for the model. The concessions here include interior lighting and an LED trunk, electric direction for the passenger seat, a standard gear selector and no dial, no gear controls behind the steering wheel, the door handles are not integrated with chrome, no roof windows and no non-contact trunk door opening - in short, any The things we would give up anyway (because really what is done on the winding road without control of the gears from the steering wheel ...) plus a bonus - an 18-inch rather than a 19-inch tire with a 60-rather-55-inch tire. With everything from everything, including a sensor to alert you to forgetting a child in the car, except for the feature that shows the "dead" area on the dashboard when signaling, it's nice no more than that if you know how to aim mirrors correctly.

In the rest of the compartment there is no difference, a dizzying amount of storage compartments in a variety of sizes, cup holders, lots of USB sockets and cup holders, connectivity to Apple and Android and cup holders, a 12.3-inch digital dashboard and a 12.3-inch multimedia screen and cup holders.

Air outlets for the three rows of seats including a separate control panel for those sitting in the back and ... very true - cup holders.

Very convenient entry, plenty of space in all rows, separate air conditioning outlets and more (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

Unlike the previous generation which was available in the 8 or 7 seat configuration, this time we were left with only the last one.

The reason for this was the fact that the importer chose to bring the vehicle in the diesel version as well, and for that he had to rely on the European standard, which does not have the 8-seat version.

Entering through the huge and electric side doors is extraordinarily easy and convenient, definitely a huge advantage over all those big "Jeeps".

The transition between the two captain's seats in the second row is easy and wide and the third row, which will usually be suitable for small and unspoiled children, will be populated with fun from an adolescent to a small and unspoiled adult.

And again, unlike other 7-seater vehicles, after you seated them all in maximum comfort you were left with a huge trunk of 627 liters.

And after everyone has relaxed, you are left with a 627-liter warehouse (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

To space

The previous round in the diesel engine left us with a good impression, but on the other hand even then we noted that the engine is a bit "thin" in terms of its working range, even with a lot of torque (45 kg), with its 201 horses reaching 3,800 rpm left with Engine under load should leave it at high rpm, diesels do not like high rpm, we do not like the way they sound there.

This time in the test version it comes with a healthy 3.5-liter V6 petrol engine with 272 hp, which while coming at a much higher rpm and with a lower torque of 33.8 rpm, but at least the power supply in it is continuous and more pleasant. The gearbox here It's a planet with 8 gears. It's energetic and is generally good when you want to make better use of the engine, but at low speeds it's a bit quick to raise gears, apparently in order to save fuel, even at the cost of an engine running below its efficient range.

Its import in European standard means that this time it has only 7 seats (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

During the test, except for two short dynamic sections, I tried to drive it as the average customer would do, including traffic jams, including an urban section, including a highway, reprimands of imaginary children who would be quietly back there and a winding road section.

At the end of the test the fuel consumption was 10 km per liter, which is not entirely bad for a 516 cm jamus from end to end and a little more than 2 tons.

Its weight together with the soft suspension calibration produce for the carnival a kind of American comfort, a kind of softness that accompanies its rolling from place to place and makes it an excellent car for long journeys.

It shines less on broken streets or on a sequence of disruptions at speeds of up to 50-60 km / h but even there, still comfortable, but less outstanding than on the highway. On such less good there are already noises penetrating the cabin.

Take a few days to get used to it in the city, it's not a Kia Picanto, but overall you can live with it not bad, even get by with parking as long as people make sure to park in the center of the marked parking area.

"Road behavior" in his case obviously requires a calibration of expectations of who he is and who he is.

Relative to a large, heavy vehicle that is definitely not designed to do that, it can be said to meet expectations.

The steering wheel is "long" which means that quite a bit of it needs to be turned until the rest of the vehicle gets into things as well.

Everything else is very predictable, with quite a bit of grip and even when it ends it is gradual.

Driving it (or any heavy and large vehicle for that matter) on descents requires the use of engine braking to ease the brakes.

Summary

Like the last time we met him the main conclusion has not changed - if you need a seven-seater car, do not really go down a paved path and luckily you have a quarter of a million shekels and north for that - to prefer one of the "SUVs" over it is just a wonderfully bad deal.

Because even though on their own, tools like the draft Highlander, Subaru Evoltis, Ford Explorer or Hyundai Placide or Chevrolet Traverse are each good in their own way - when you put them in front of what the carnival has to offer, the truth turns out - they are bad at doing what their pose conveys. Space ") and not as good as the carnival in doing what their customers need (carry passengers and luggage), definitely a wise consumer ...

At night, the lighting strip gives it a sophisticated look that can be recognized from a distance (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

Carnival on the other hand hurts the needs of customers and does them excellently with a minimum of compromises. In my opinion, the base version is the best in terms of value for money, the 20,000 shekels for the additions of the "premium" finish level do not significantly improve it for what it is supposed to do. Here the dilemma is mainly with the expensive diesel version of the gasoline for 10,000 shekels, in the test for the diesel version the fuel consumption was 11.9 km per liter and on the one hand it is clear that it can be improved, on the other hand, in the absence of diesel control, you mainly depend on finding a cheap station. Worthwhile enough to recoup this cost, or of course depending on your annual ride.In terms of engine characteristics anyway, I find the petrol submissive, quieter and more suited to its American comfort. So

even in this round and even more so with the petrol engine and this level of finish, Kia Carnival Is our unequivocal recommendation for a large 7-seater car on this budget, not that the others are bad,Because he makes them irrelevant.
