After Rotterdam, Vienna or The Hague, a new European city has been the target of clashes.

Clashes erupted this Sunday during a demonstration against the new anti-Covid measures in Brussels, which brought together more than 35,000 people.

They follow the announcements of sanitary measures to fight against the new epidemic wave.

The Belgian march started peacefully, but the police then used water cannons and tear gas in front of a group of people throwing projectiles.

At least two police officers were injured during the clashes, when a riot unit, supported by a water cannon, charged the crowd.

A protester was also evacuated by ambulance.

During the clash, several protesters wore balaclavas and waved Flemish nationalist flags, while others sported yellow stars reminiscent of the Nazi occupation. Wooden pallets were burned, and images on social media showed protesters attacking police vehicles. The face-to-face with riot police took place in the Belgian administration and EU government district in Brussels, right next to the US and Russian embassies.

The demonstration, held under the slogan "Together for freedom", mainly denounced the ban on unvaccinated people from accessing places such as restaurants and bars.

Belgium, which announced on Wednesday the generalization of the wearing of a mask, also wants to make teleworking compulsory for jobs that allow it in order to stem the strong rebound of the epidemic in the country.

Hospitalizations at the highest since May

With nearly 10,300 new infections per day on average over the past week, Belgium is back to a rate of spread of the virus that had not been reached for a year, like other European countries.

The country is experiencing levels of hospitalization of Covid patients that it had not recorded since May (more than 2,000 patients, including more than 25% in intensive care).

The Netherlands has also experienced unrest linked to the recent partial confinement decreed by the government.

Police said on Sunday they had arrested 19 people after a second night of violent protests and riots.

In The Hague, where the government is based, police officers in riot gear charged groups of demonstrators who threw stones and various objects at them in a popular neighborhood.

Several police officers were injured.

As of Friday evening, violence in Rotterdam had resulted in 51 arrests.

Three people were shot and wounded by the police.

In Austria, around 6,000 people, according to the police, demonstrated in calm Sunday afternoon in Linz (north) against the government's anti-Covid measures, the day after a massive mobilization in Vienna which had attracted 40,000 protesters.

Nine of the ten countries recording the biggest accelerations of the week (among those with at least 1000 daily contaminations) are located on the Old Continent.

In proportion to the population, excluding micro-states, the country with the most new cases this week remains Slovenia (1,107 per 100,000 inhabitants), ahead of Austria (981) and Croatia (887).
