Stephen Sondheim, one of the greatest and most important composers and lyricists in Broadway history, passed away at the age of 91 at his home in Connecticut. Sondheim, a Jew by birth, composed the lyrics and melodies for many well-known musicals, including "Company," "Sweeney Todd," "Into the Woods," "Sunday in the Park with George." In addition, he co-created "The Story of the Suburbs" and "Gypsy" and also wrote songs for the movie "Dick Tracy". He has won numerous awards, including Tony, Grammy, and Oscars, and is considered one of the most important and influential composers in the field of musicals in the second half of the 20th century.

Sondheim was born in New York to a dressmaker father and a fashion designer mother. He began playing the piano at a young age and at the age of 10 befriended his neighbor Jimmy Hammerstein, the son of Oscar Hammerstein, author of the renowned musicals. Oscar Hammerstein became a mentor for Sondheim. The period of Sondheim's mentorship with Hammerstein had a great influence on Sondheim's professional development.

When Sondheim was 25, he wrote the lyrics to the musical "The Story of the Suburbs," to the music of Leonard Bernstein. The musical, which premiered in 1957, was a huge success, and even worked on an Oscar-winning film in 1961. The success was followed by two more successes: the musical "Gypsy" in 1959 and the musical "A Funny Thing Happened to Me on the Way to the Forum" in 1962. These two musicals were also later adapted into films.

Sondheim later wrote and composed many successful musicals, including "Company" in 1970 which was considered revolutionary at the time, "Follies" (1971), "Tiny Night Music" (1973), "Pacific Overtures" (1976) and "Sweeney Todd "(1979). In 1984 he created the musical "Sunday in the Park with George" which won him the Pulitzer Prize for Drama - a prestigious award not usually given to musicals. In 2008 Sondheim won the Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement. In 2015, he was decorated with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by US President Barack Obama.

Many creators praised Sondheim, including playwright Lynn Manuel Miranda, who noted the names of the main characters in Sondheim's works and made it clear to future historians: "Yes, he was real, and brought a big laugh to the stage and that's how we loved him."
