The V60 Cross Country is one of the nature boys among the Volvo models.
The diesel, which is still on offer, is also robust.
But can he keep his consumption promise?
At Volvo, cross country doesn't just mean a more angular design.
The V60 CC has all-wheel drive and six centimeters more ground clearance.
The diesel is supported by an electric motor - does that bring anything?
BMW Touring too expensive, VW Variant too boring? Nevertheless, it should be a station wagon - but not off the shelf? Then
Volvo *
comes
into play. The Swedes have only been involved in this segment for a little more than a decade - but they offer a real alternative to mid-range station wagons with the V60. The Swedish cigar on four wheels is also available as a
cross version
for hunters, foresters or people who live far away from the shot and are often out and about on field and forest paths. Or simply for customers who appreciate the rustic exterior (own radiator grille, wider wheel arches) and the greater ground clearance of a total of 21 centimeters (and thus six centimeters more than the conventional model).
All-wheel drive
is standard on the Cross, the same applies to the eight-speed automatic transmission that drives both gasoline and diesel engines.

Volvo V60 Cross Country: Each additional horsepower costs 10 euros
Both machines are
four-cylinder
, both have a displacement of just under two liters and both are supported by an electric motor that charges the small battery on board while driving.
The petrol engine has 250 hp, the diesel only 197
, which is why one of them manages the sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.8 seconds, while the diesel engine takes 8.2 seconds.
In both cases, the
14 hp electric motor boosts
With.
Which unit you choose from the two - at least in terms of price, it almost doesn't matter.
The basic version of the gasoline engine costs 500 euros more, which is around ten euros for each horsepower.
Less power - the fuel consumption speaks for the diesel, which should move at least on paper around six liters, with gasoline it is just under eight liters.
We are excited
Inside the station wagon there is calm sobriety.
Anyone who likes bling bling is wrong with the Volvo V60.

Drive diesel as long as you can drive diesel
We
decided on
diesel
- we will drive diesel as long as there is still diesel. It's also fun when the engine purrs powerfully and pushes the torque powerfully from below. You can always take it easy on the streets. And if it is necessary, a slight push on the accelerator is all it takes and the Tiger sprints off. Whether city traffic or the highway - the diesel is a commode thing. It should actually also be when it
comes to consumption
. But maybe accelerating on our test drive was just too much fun, because we couldn't get by with the forecast six liters, with almost eight liters it was significantly more. Or maybe it was due to the relatively high proportion of the motorway. If the traffic gave it, we did
the maximum speed of 180 km / h, voluntarily capped by Volvo, was
fully exploited. Such a self-commitment, be it for security reasons or because you wanted to attract a lot of journalistic attention, is basically not a problem. The moments when you can move freely on a German autobahn are rare. But critics feel reminded of the senior teacher image that used to stick to Volvo like warm tar. Speaking of which:
if you own
this
V60
, you can set the speed limit yourself when lending your car to family members or novice drivers. With the orange care key, the pace is topped as you want it.
A combination for foresters, forest workers or for people who like to go into the wilderness in their free time - that is what Cross Country wants to be.

V60 - safe, even when it gets steep and slippery
The
chassis of the V60
is typically Volvo. Preferably, comfortable but not so softly sprung that you feel like the proverbial princess and the pea. The
cross country
wants to be moved comfortably, that is a long-distance runner with off-road skills. If need be, he scurries briskly around the corners, but the rather rough feedback from the steering shows how reluctantly he does it. With the intelligent
all-wheel drive
, which shifts the forces between the axles as required, and the greater ground clearance, the Volvo should be quite suitable for the average demands of European secondary routes. And if it should get slippery and steep - the Cross Country also has the standard hill descent aid on board.
Fabric, aluminum, leather - the interior of the Volvo V60 consists of gray and black tones.

V60 Cross Country: And those are the points of criticism
So far, so solid - we have two points on the
V60 Cross Country
bothered in the end. The hardware of the digital architecture is perfectly fine with the centrally arranged 12.3 inch display. Completely sufficient in terms of size, but from the point of view of the operation, everything seems a bit dusty and conservative. Digital natives should not be at home in this system. It's not playful enough for that. It has what it takes. But nothing more. Example: Title and band name played on digital radio - no result. And there is also a lack of language assistance. You have to be tough when the bossy and disgruntled woman's voice comes out of the loudspeaker. Maybe fun for submissive contemporaries, but the choppy-sounding organ is unreasonable for everyone else. At least the speech recognition usually works,Here at Volvo, at least the software has improved a lot.
Also interesting:

Loadmaster or just runner-up?
Second point of criticism: When it
comes
to the
trunk
, the Cross-Country has to give up when compared to other station wagons such as the Audi A4 or VW Passat.
The Swedes are roughly on par with the Avant from Ingolstadt, with slight advantages for Audi (1510 liters and thus 70 liters more when folded down).
The Volvo has no chance against the Variant from VW.
With 650, around 120 liters more are available here; when folded down, the gap increases by over 340 liters to the class leader.
So if you have a lot to transport, you have to consider whether the V60 has the right collar size.
