The Mitsubishi Outlander is also trying to defend its status as a bestseller in the current generation, but this time the competition is tougher.

In the top price segment it meets the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace.

When attacking a target, every cadet in the 1st Battalion will tell you that the most important thing is the momentum. 2013. Even in a generation before it it had such configurations, but it was the combination of its convenient price and the pose that fascinated more customers before it went for vehicles like Toyota Verso, Mazda 5 or Kia Carens. But a lot has changed since more and more manufacturers realized Pop up next to it.Nissan X-Trail, Peugeot 5008 and Skoda Kodiak are just part of the list.Whoever was not in this game and lacks momentum at all is Volkswagen, she changes this story with the Tiguan Allspace, an extended 7-seater version of the Tiguan that will try to penetrate this segment.

The contestants

The Mitsubishi Outlander in its new generation is making a leap forward compared to the outgoing and very, very old generation. It has been marketed in Israel since July 2021 and shares a completely new platform with the new Nissan X-Trail that has not yet arrived in Israel. The dimensions are similar to the outgoing generation, but a 3.5 cm increase in the wheelbase to 271 cm ensures an improvement in the interior space. Indeed, he no longer has the cheapest price tag in his group, with a starting price of NIS 184,000 to NIS 242,000. Here in this test is the highest level of finish - Luxury, which costs NIS 222,000 (above which are the more expensive combined paint and dual-propulsion versions).

In the other corner is a Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace.

It is however not really young and was introduced in 2017 as an elongated version of the compact Tiguan that will contain 7 seats.

It came to us about a month ago in a somewhat problematic configuration - a 2.0-liter engine, dual propulsion and a premium finish level with a very long equipment list.

As for the latter, there is no problem, but together with the powerful engine and dual propulsion, its price throws it into the worlds of 230,000 shekels (240 in the test version with the panoramic sunroof).

When only last week it was joined by a discounted version with a 1.5-liter engine and front-wheel drive starting at NIS 185,000.

Outside and inside

Well, we could not put up two vehicles with more polar access to the exterior appearance.

As long as the Tiguan is alone it has a solid, dignified and impressive appearance.

But once the Outlander enters the room everything changes.

Appearance is entirely a matter of taste, but when it comes to impression - the Outlander will turn much more heads and the effect of the manager arriving at the parking lot will be much more significant with him than with the Tiguan next to which looks anemic and generic.

Entering the cabin continues the way these two vehicles differ from each other. The extroversion and impression of the Outlander continues here as well. The digital dashboard, floating screen and good human engineering are joined by a performance that at first glance makes you wonder if Mitsubishi is trying to penetrate the luxury market. Rhombus stitching on the light leather seats, light leather upholstery on the dashboard, console and doors and in general a truly luxurious atmosphere. But the impression does not last too long when you start touching and find that the skin is too loose in places, that apart from these places, there are too many corners with the use of rigid plastic, that the wall of the seat rests on the plastic frame in a way that makes it rub. Filled with the noise it makes, but it seems that this regular rubbing will not cause the upholstery to prolong life.

In Volkswagen the direction is completely different.

It also has a beautiful multimedia screen and digital dashboard, leather seats and also a top-notch display, but it's the look of the previous generation of manufacturer cars for better or worse.

For good thanks to the human engineering that is before the sophisticated look and location of normal air vents.

Too bad because the signs of age are already noticeable in it, while the competitors present a more modern-looking driver environment.

The quality of materials and construction is very good.

Light skin and a very luxurious look in Mitsubishi (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

The instrumentation lists in both tools are very impressive, climate controls split into three areas, a variety of charging sockets, compatibility with Android and Apple (wireless in Mitsubishi) and other vegetables, electric and heated seats but too bad to waste words on it, you can find them in full on their sites, we will concentrate on gaps.

The original Volkswagen Towing Hook includes a reversing assistance system with a trailer, adaptive shock absorbers and the front seats are also ventilated.

In the Outlander the sunroof is as standard, there is control of the gears from the steering wheel, it has special stability control for trailing stabilization, heating for the side mirrors, a BOSE audio system and 10 speakers.

Some of the bonus that the Mitsubishi registers in the comfort armature is lost with the safety clauses.

Although it offers 11 airbags (8 in the Tiguan) but it lacks the correction of the deviation from the lane in the Tiguan and is satisfied only with an alert, the German also has front parking sensors in addition to the rear and a 5 star rating in the European crash test where the Mitsubishi was not tested. From Europe.

Front and back

The second row of seats in these cars offers very good space, an adjustable backrest and movement of the entire bench on a rail to "play" between the space and those sitting in this row and the rear / trunk volume.

In terms of appearance, it's again a matter of taste and impression when the Tiguan is dark and purposeful except for a strip of wood and mood lighting compared to the white skin and stitching of the rhombuses in the Outlander which gives it a much more luxurious look.

Indeed, the Tiguan, which enjoys a 9 cm long wheelbase, has more space than the Outlander in both rows. The Tiguan also offers a 12V socket in addition to the USB C at the rear. .

The impressive look remains in the back seats (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

Better spacing in Tiguan (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

In the third line section it's already a dizzying knockout for Tiguan.

Not that it's amazing, not at all - the seat is short and the floor is high and forces knee bending.

Even the headroom is unlikely for something that is north of an adolescent boy.

But with all that, in Mitsubishi the situation is less good.

It starts with a significantly smaller door key that cuts a very inconvenient entry to the third row only to find that the exit is even less convenient from it.

The seat itself is a bit longer than the Tiguan's, but there is no legroom at all.

None of them have the one important thing in such cars - air conditioning outlets for those sitting here - the Skoda Kodiak has, just say ...

The third line in Outlander is simply not useful (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

The Tiguan continues to lead in the usability section with a more successful trunk than the Outlander, both in a 7 or 5-seater configuration.

These are not only the actual dimensions of the width and depth indicated by the measuring tape pulled out in such tests, but also the structure of the more useful charging port in Volkswagen and also the official volume of the manufacturers.

230 liters in a Volkswagen with all the seats in use and 700 in a five-seater configuration compared to 148 liters in the Outlander up to 655 liters without the two seats in the third row (volume up to ceiling height when measuring a 5-seater configuration).

Passengers and turn

Both tools are very pleasant for administrative driving.

Starting from the level of the seats themselves and north.

Those who like the soft armchair-style seats in which the body sinks will choose the Outlander, it also allowed us to sit lower in the car, but this is mainly related to the preference of driving position, most people who actually prefer high driving position will not be a problem with any of the tools.

In both excellent noise insulation, that of the Tiguan is a little more excellent at absorbing engine noise and not just road, wind and tire noise.

And again in the realm of preferences, the "American" Outlander in absorbing its disruptions, a kind of buoyancy and levitation on disruptions and a wavy road that swallows what happens under the wheels in the movement of the body on the shock absorbers.

The Tiguan Allspace is tighter, more restrained and stiffer.

This means that it completes this act of damping and returning faster and more punctually than the Outlander, or in other words - less well on a bumpy road.

Smaller volume in Outlander (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

A more useful trunk in Tiguan (Photo: Keenan Cohen)

But of course every Saturday has a Saturday night, the price of this general softness in Outlander is in the inquiries.

While the Volkswagen continues to be sharp, precise and therefore has a higher capacity and a greater sense of security in curves, backed by dual propulsion with a more efficient power-down capability.

The Mitsubishi grunts, bends, leans and bends in all directions in braking and turns and if the engineers of Netivei Israel have also left a small fold of ground before the bend or during it the Outlander is already losing it completely and swaying excessively.

And that's fine, for that he does not really lose points with us, not this time.

It is known that with the arrival of the fourth child you give up two essential things for mental health - Saturday night and driving pleasure. No one plans such a tool to bring a smile to their winding road. But in Mitsubishi a little exaggerated with the low continuum.

Handsome and restrained (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

Another thing that completely eliminates the urge to move the Outlander fast is its continuous gearbox.

Yes, it is significantly improved over the previous gearbox, no, it is still not a good gearbox even with the "gears" built into it.

And it's very noticeable when you press the gas and it screams the 181 horses of the engine with shouts.

The Tiguan has a dual-clutch gearbox that does all this business of organizing its 190 horses to work in efficient and fast German ticking.

This is also reflected in the accelerations, in which the German horses made the Tiguan leap faster than the place.

At intermediate accelerations between 50 and 120 km / h, equality was recorded between the two.

Consistently throughout the test, the Outlander recorded the better fuel consumption. 12.6 km per liter in administrative driving compared to 10.7 in the Tiguan.

And later it was reduced to 8.9 km in the Outlander compared to 8.4 km per liter in the Tiguan after the dynamic, additional administrative chapters and the final fuel consumption test.

Comes to do a show (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

Summary

Two cars stood up to this comparative test, at the end of which we have to declare one as the winner.

And the truth?

I can not.

Because if you need a 7-seater car and spend so much money on a crossover - none of them are a particularly attractive deal (in the case of the cheaper versions it's a different story).

If you want to stay the same size, the Skoda Kodiak will do the same job, only a little better and with a little less money.

You can also go for a bigger one, give a small push for the budget and go up to the worlds of the Kia Sorrento, which starts at NIS 235,000, or a bigger push for the best choice for those who need 7 seats - a Kia Carnival for NIS 250,000.

It is clear to you who will be frustrated at the entrance to the parking lot, right? (Photo: Keinan Cohen)

But if I still have to pull out a winning map, it has to be the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace.

Yes, it is less impressive on the outside and inside, its ride comfort is less good and its benefits in terms of behavior and performance are really irrelevant this time.

If you do not need a third row, you can go for the Outlander, but if that is the case why are you even debating between them.

On the other hand in what is indeed relevant to those who buy these cars - the two third-row seats and the trunk - the Tiguan is simply the more practical of the two and therefore does better what they are required to do.
