Corona: What is the name of the currently rampant variant of the corona virus? Omikron, not Omnikron

What is the name of the currently rampant variant of the coronavirus? Omikron, not Omnikron - and also the reading recommendations of the week from the science department of SPIEGEL.

I know we make this mistake too (after all, I only found it once in the SPIEGEL archive).

Most of all, I notice him spoken on the radio and television.

Now the "n" is screaming at me;

therefore now a little smart shit asking for more mindfulness.

Omicron (modern Greek Ὄμικρον) means translated "small o", in contrast to omega, the "big O".

The letter has its origin in a symbol of the so-called Protosinaitic alphabet, a script that was used on the Sinai Peninsula more than 3500 years ago.

This script, in turn, is probably derived from Egyptian hieroglyphics.

The small "o" is probably based on a symbol for the eye, which over time lost its pupil.

As a donkey bridge for Omikron, I recommend imagining your own grandmother as a queen.

Omnikron with an »n«, on the other hand, is either the name of an IT company from Hamburg-Bergedorf, a fully composite model airplane or a song by the Greek techno DJ Kostas Periv (who, however, doesn't seem to be quite sure about his song himself is called).

The question remains why, after the delta variant (the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet), at least in public perception, the omicron variant immediately followed, after all already the fifteenth letter of the Greek alphabet.

The rapid evolution of the coronavirus is to blame.

In fact, there are other variants between Delta and Omikron named by the WHO.

It should be ten.

But there are only eight because the letters Ny and Xi were skipped in the naming.

The experts found the likelihood of confusion too great.

Ny is pronounced like the English "new".

Xi is a common family name in Chinese-speaking countries.

I am curious how it will go on now.

Pi is the next letter in the Greek alphabet.

It will definitely be a completely irrational variant of the virus.

Sincerely

yours, Philip Bethge

  • What is the difference between the ancient Greek alphabet and all the alphabets before it?

  • How many letters does the Greek alphabet have today?

    22, 24 or 26?

  • How are the coronavirus variants that are named with letters of the Greek alphabet abbreviated?

    VOC or VOI?

  • * You can find the answers at the bottom of the newsletter.

    Picture of the week

    Sunbeams fall

    through a mosaic window into this newly constructed burial mound based on Neolithic models

    in the English county of Shropshire.

    The "Soulton Long Barrow" is oriented so that the burial chamber is flooded with the light of the setting sun on the day of the winter solstice in December.

    The hall is modeled on more than 5000 year old places of the dead and is spanned by a mighty cantilever vault made of stones.

    Up to 80 people can use the place for funerals and memorial ceremonies.

    * Quiz Answers:

    1. The ancient Greek alphabet was the first alphabet with vowel characters.

    By using so-called diphthongs (two vowels with which a sound is represented, in German eg "ei"), one could represent the twelve different vowel sounds in ancient Greek despite the only seven vowel signs.

    2. The Greek alphabet has 24 characters.

    It was developed from the Phoenician alphabet, which has 22 consonant characters.

    The Latin alphabet consists of 26 characters; in Germany, ä, ü, ö and ß are added.

    3. VOC (Variant of Concern);

    VOI (Variant of Interest) are variants that are under observation and are classified as less dangerous by the WHO.
